Hey everybody, my name is Nick Hess and I am a senior at Saint Thomas More. First, I would like to thank Mr. Grasley for the opportunity to blog for MileSplit Illinois. I will try to keep these short and to the point, just touching on the basics of our team and training.
Last fall we won the team title for class 1A and I placed third individually. That championship meant the world to us because it was something that we had been looking forward to for a couple years. Winning a championship with those guys was incredible, mainly because of how close we were. This year we return five of the top seven varsity runners, and we are again aiming towards a team title. Our top three runners are looking very strong at the moment so if we can get that four and five going we will be tough. The competition this year is certainly fierce, and we are doing everything possible to ready ourselves for when the gun goes off November 9th. This summer the guys and I logged some very good base mileage. We met as a team consistently either in the evenings or mornings to get after it. Along with the mileage increase, we’ve supplemented different core and general strength exercises along with cross training to our regiment. We attended the camp hosted by the University of Bradley in late July. We all had a great time and learned a lot. Along with the camp, we raced at the Detweiller At Dark race which was a blast and gave us a little insight on our current fitness level.
As we begin to dive into workouts and raise the intensity I can’t help but get anxious to start racing. We are very excited for what this season will bring. Hopefully it will be a great season for all of us. We are making sure we are working hard, knowing all the competition is out there working hard as well. We will continue to raise the mileage and the intensity to ready ourselves for the season.
