MileSplit and FloTrack have partnered with New Balance to create the "Local Heroes" program, in order to recognize local high school distance runners who are making a real difference in the world around them.
New Balance understands that student-athletes can have a profound impact not only with their athletic contributions, but for their actions off the course to become a positive force towards others. A Local Hero is defined as a cross country student-athlete who makes a difference in their community or school. This person does not have to be the best runner on their team--or even running varsity for that matter. A Local Hero does more than run, they go above-and-beyond to make the world a better place than they found it. Local Heroes are able to balance an academic workload, athletic engagements, and community activism.
Starting today through July 15, you can nominate an athlete in your area of Chicago that you believe exemplifies the "Local Hero" ideal. From these nominations, we will choose five finalists from the Chicago Metro area. We will announce the heroes we have chosen on August 1, and each finalist will receive a special gear kit from New Balance.
From those five finalists, we will announce the overall winner of the New Balance Local Hero contest from Chicago at the end of August. The winner will receive an awards party at a local running shoe retailer and their XC team will be outfitted with free New Balance shoes!
