Collegiate Debuts and Post-College Successes

Collegiate freshmen aren't the only ones who have been busy. A number of university seniors and post-college athletes have been making a statement as well. Kieran Lumb who graduated from Lord Byng in 2016 and went on to compete at both the University of British Columbia and the University of Washington, now runs professionally for On. He continued his indoor season at the Dempsey, placing second in the 3000m with a time of 7:40.53. Just over a month ago Lumb set a Canadian Indoor Record in the same event with a time of 3:38.39 to take 1.7 seconds off Mohammed Ahmed's record from 2016. With this time, Lumb became the first Canadian man under 7:40.

Another BC standout that graduated a few years ago is Jasneet Nijjar. Nijjar graduated in 2019 from Queen Elizabeth Secondary School, where she became a multiple-time BC High School Champion across the 100m, 200m, 400m and 100m hurdles. Now in her final year competing with Washington State, Nijjar has started her season off with a bang. She opened up in December at the Spokane Invitational winning the 300m with a time of 37.67 seconds. Flash forward to January 12th, Nijjar again took a first place finish, this time in the 400m with a time of 54.11 seconds. At the time of the run Nijjar was ranked at the top of the NCAA in the event. After the weekend she sits at 10th, with Shawnti Jackson of Arkansas sitting in top spot with a time of 52.10 seconds.

We can't wait to see what unfolds next this season, especially as BC will be hosting the Harry Jerome Indoor at the start of February. See you then!
