STAR Teams Rankings (2/9): Kenwood Tops both Genders

After two full weekends of competitions in Illinois, we have the first STAR Team Rankings. With many of the meets occurring in the city area, especially on the banked Dr. Conrad Worrill Track at Gately Park, there is strong city representation on these rankings to begin the year, especially the Broncos of Kenwood who have a score of six on both the Boys' and the Girls' sides. Kenwood girls' full team performance at the Dr. Worrill Invitational was matched by Whitney Young, who ties Kenwood at the top on the legs of distance and field results.

On the Boys' side, there were solid team performances to open the season from OPRF at Proviso West, and Grayslake Central at Rockford Auburn. Both teams have hit standards already in three field events. Hot on their heels are York and Naperville Central who went head-to-head at the opening York Boys' quad.

Mahomet-Seymour boys and Chicago Latin girls lead the 2A rankings. DeAngelo Hughey and Mia Kotler are doing the heavy lifting for these teams with their early pre-season performances.

Girls' 1A is topped by Peru (St. Bede) and El-Paso Gridley with two points each. Springfield (Lutheran)'s three points (all Mason Kooi) lead the boy's rankings. As more meets downstate are held and results pour in, there will be more teams who catch up in these areas.

The most extensive areas for teams to still grab points are in the relays and field events. The hurdles will not be represented until the outdoor season, and there have been many strong 55m and 60m performances that aren't reflected in these rankings either. Expect some of the deeper teams in the technicals to make some moves over the next two weeks.

If you need a refresher, here is the explanation for these rankings and how they work!

Note: Non-school pre-season results WERE used in these current rankings.
