New Balance Local Heroes Winner: Brendan Remington

Brendan Remington spent hours upon hours sitting at the hospital, waiting by his brother's bed side. Brendan was thirteen. His brother Luke was ten and dying of Leukemia. The St. Thomas More senior lost his brother in April of 2010. After weeks of feeling down, he decided rather than thinking about how he's gone, how can they help other kids and families in the same situation. He says that is when they decided to start Luke's League.

"We raise money to send to the groups that work directly with the kids in the hospital so that they won't be as bored while cooped up in their room. We also have a toy drive around Christmas to give the kids something to do while they're in the hospital during the Christmas season. Our main event is our cancer walk where last year we raised just under 10,000 dollars."

St. Thomas More coach David Behm nominated Remington for the award. The senior skipped a homecoming dance last year because it fell on the same day as the walk. A number of classmates came out to support him at the event.  Behm says he was choked up by the love that Remington has for others and that others have for him.

"Since I have known Brendan he has been working to raise money and awareness for cancer and research.  He is truly a hero to me. The world is a much better place having Brendan in it."

As the winner of the New Balance Local Heroes contest, Remington will receive a party at his local running store as well as New Balance running shoes for the St. Thomas More cross country team.
