Re-live The WSC Silver Boys Championship Race Tony Jones Oct 22, 2015

Every state in the Union can brag about their best team or set of best teams. That is a given and a nature birth right to do so. However, when it comes to boys cross country, it would be incredibly hard to argue against the West Suburban Conference (Silver Division) not being the premier league in Illinois.

3A Boys Cross Country Team Preview: #15-#1 Raymond Lewis Aug 24, 2015

The last several years at the top of the 3A food chain has seen Hinsdale Central (enjoying the spoils of victory above last year) eating mighty good. The Red Devils fought off their key would be hunter in Orland Park (Sandburg) in earning a second consecutive state championship.

Illinois Shows And Proves At NXN Midwest Regional Tony Jones Nov 18, 2014

Indiana has always shown love to its guests when it comes to sports. Cross Country over the years has been a big beneficiary in that department. It started with the AAU, TAC, and USATF post-season regional and national meets  for the tots, leading all the way up to the NCAA national championships and the professional ranks. Nike Cross Nationals got in on the action in 2007 and has never looked back.

Class 3A Boys State Championship Cross Country Preview Raymond Lewis Nov 7, 2014

State week! Historic Detweiller Park in Peoria has held a special place in my heart ever since I first ran there my sophomore year during the season but I don’t think I’m the only person in Illinois who feels that way. I’ve been to the state meet both as part of a qualifying team and to watch individuals from our school, and it is hard to parallel the excitement and energy at the park.

Class 3A Girls State Championship Cross Country Preview Tony Jones Nov 7, 2014

Every state championship seems to bring out the best in Illinois runners. Could it be that historic Detweiller is the reason? Perhaps it is to an extent, but the real reason has to be better coaching of girls for the three-mile distance. Two seasons ago Madeline Perez of Glenbard West set the all-time record of 16:02. That performance and the other 86 girls who broke 18:00 confirmed the fact that girls can indeed run the same distance as boys with relevance and respect. This year times are fast and we all should see some wonderful team and individual performances on Saturday afternoon

Palatine Invite Preview: Another Good One Brewing Tony Jones Sep 26, 2014

In the NCAA ranks, this will be the first weekend that invitationals will count toward their "countable season". The countable season basically means results will count toward at-large consideration into the NCAA Championships. The IHSA does not have this (perhaps they should and that is a discussion for another day)...

Peoria Notre Dame Richard Spring Invite Preview: It's More Than A Name Tony Jones Sep 19, 2014

his is the reason that the commonly phased Peoria Notre Dame Invitational or PND will be officially referred as the Richard Spring Memorial Invitational on paper: “Richard Spring, a 1981 graduate of Bergan High School in Peoria, ran cross-country, the mile, and the two-mile. Participating on two state championship teams, Richard personally finished third in the single-class IHSA state tournament in his senior year. Richard died running at Augustana College in 1982.”

Class 3A Boys: Super 30 Pre-Season Preview Tony Jones Aug 26, 2014

"There are so many good teams but not enough time"- a wise quote from a high school historian who proclaimed that when a sport is good there is not enough time to really enjoy it. The upcoming boys large classification may fit that bill. A new star was born last year when Hinsdale Central joined the elite class and won their first state championship going away. This year it should be another great cast of scenarios for us all to follow and enjoy.... strap it up and make the time!

Prospect Wanner Invitational Receives Grade A Approval Tony Jones May 4, 2014

The 46th Annual Prospect Wanner Knights Invitational entered the track world scene with tremendous hype amid the pending so-so weather forecasts. Mother Nature promised all of the faithful who trekked to Prospect High School in Mt. Prospect Friday evening that she would do her best in presenting decent climes.  If she kept her word the boys of spring would take over and do their best to not disappoint the track and field aficionados.

Proviso West Boys Invite Leads Super Weekend Charge Tony Jones Feb 23, 2014

Traditionally, the third weekend of the February is considered “The Super Weekend” of track and field in Illinois because it’s when teams really get to strut their stuff for the first time. So it should not be a surprise to hear coaches saying their athletes have been scratching and kicking on the barn doors all winter in anticipation of competing in some top notch invitationals.

Proviso West Boys Indoor Classic Preview Tony Jones Feb 21, 2014

The 49th Annual Proviso West Boys track meet has a few names that fans go by. One is the Proviso West Boys Invitational, Proviso West Boys Indoor Classic, or the Proviso West Boys 16-team Invite.  Whatever you wish to call to the meet it should be a good, quality meet if not great.

2014 Class 3A Boys Relays Pre-Season Preview Tony Jones Feb 10, 2014

This season will carry many hopes and dreams for teams and their fans who love relays.  It allows the whole team to feel that sense of team and” family.”  There will be opportunities for the traditionally strong squads as well as emerging units to move in and earn their place in IHSA annals.  The premier of all relays in Illinois is the 4x800m relay.  This video called the “Boys 4x800 Premier Event” proves that fact.

3A Championship Recap: It's A West Suburban Silver Sweep! Tony Jones Nov 10, 2013

It was just several years ago that the Mid-Suburban League (MSL) had a strong hold on as the state’s best combined cross country conference. It was then that Palatine was the anchor team that ruled boys and girls high school running. Barrington, Mt. Prospect (Prospect), and Hoffman Estates are other strong examples.

New Trier Pulls Upset Of York; Madeline Fuels Glenbard West Attack Tony Jones Nov 3, 2013

The weather cooperated long enough for the competition to exercise their demons on a new course on the grounds of Lake Park High School’s east campus. The Lancer staff and community finally got their opportunity to host a sectional championship after putting in bids for years.  They responded with an awesome presentation and display.  Kudos!

Team JV Rankings: The Next In Line Todd Grasley Oct 21, 2013

Our MileSplit database is an incredibly powerful tool. Not only can you rank individuals and teams, by class, region, grade, etc, but we can also see how those runners who might not get as much limelight, the junior varsity squads look. We wanted to see who the top teams would be scoring the #8- #14 runners. and this is what we came up with! This also gives you an indication of the depth some teams have waiting in the wings.

Christian Brothers Academy (NJ) rolled again this weekend to retain their perch atop the rankings and add to their legend, by winning with 90 points and a course record 12:44.34 team average.  But that's not all!!

3A Boys Team Preview: #5-#1 Tony Jones Aug 23, 2013

The summer is really like spring for cross country enthusiasts who had to wait all winter and spring for their time of the year to talk up their sport.  All over the Midwest coaches, athletes, parents, and fans get excited about the prospects of the coming fall and what to expect.  In Illinois, cross country is huge and the expectations of storied programs never change.  Elmhurst York is the flagship program and everyone knows to follow in step.  However, there are several teams in line to bolster themselves to the forefront.  One team in particular is O’Fallon.  The Panthers have been the penultimate type team for several years now.  The St. Louis area team has been patient for quite for some time. That time may be finally arriving.  As well, there will be 25 teams at the end of the day on the course at the fabled Detweiller Park with the same vision as O’Fallon and York.

NXN Midwest: Where Does York Get Their Inspiration? Tradition, and Last Year's 2nd Place Finish. Nov 16, 2012

TERRE HAUTE – Scott Milling admitted it.  While every Kroy (York HS, IL) cross-country club has high expectations as part of its DNA, last year’s entry at Nike Cross Nationals Midwest was no sure bet to make it to Portland and extend the program’s streak to eight.  So when Milling and Co. learned they were second, even if it was a distant second behind Columbus Thorn (Columbus North HS, IN), it was cause for celebration. In His Own Words: Scott Milling Scott Milling Sep 26, 2012

Hey everybody thanks again for checking out my blog.  First, I would like to thank guys like Billy Bund and Jack Keelan who complemented me at Palatine on my first blog. I appreciate all the support. This past week we had two meets so let’s just get right to that.

In His Own Words: Scott Milling Scott Milling Sep 18, 2012

Hello, my name is Scott Milling and I am a senior at York High School. First, I would like to thank Mr. Grasley and MileSplit Illinois for asking me to write a blog for their site. Each week, I will try to write a blog just talking about that week’s meet and how the team is doing on a whole (right now I’ve moved it over writing an essay on an Emily Dickinson poem, really just a no brainer). Well, let’s just get started…

Athlete Spotlight: Jack Driggs (York IL) Brandon Miles Dec 7, 2010

Jack Driggs just competed in his third Nike Cross Nationals as he led the York (IL) team to another NXN berth with an 18th place individual finish in the race at Portland. After hoping for a top 10 finish in Portland, Driggs will get an opportunity to redeem himself this weekend as one of the 40 finalists for the 2010 Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego. It will be his first time racing at Foot Locker Nationals, but Driggs has plenty of national caliber meet racing experience from his three previous appearances at NXN with his York teammates under the legendary coach Joe Newton. Driggs was ranked #17 in the MileSplit US rankings prior to NXN and is one of the nation's top returning milers after winning the Midwest Distance Gala mile last June with a 4:08 performance. MileSplit US interviewed the Illinois state cross country runner-up Driggs heading into his trip to compete at Balboa Park for the Foot Locker Nationals.

Naperville North clips York, Thode garners unlikely win D.J. Piehowski Nov 8, 2008

Snow and sleet fell from the sky as runners took to the line at Peoria’s Detweiller Park on Saturday, but that wasn’t even the most unexpected occurrence of the 2008 IHSA State Cross Country meet. The US #4 favorite Elmhurst (York) was edged out by US #5 Naperville North by just one point in the Class 3A boys’ race. Naperville North was led by top-10 finishes from Kyle Gibson and David McWilliams on its way to totaling 84 points and winning the state title. Gibson took home fourth place at 14:23, while McWilliams grabbed eighth with his time of 14:35. “To win in a state meet this deep, where there are so many places to switch spots, our kids really needed to run great,”said Naperville North Coach David Racey. “Beating a team like York was tremendous, and with as good as Geneva ran, it really just shows how great Illinois cross country is.” York was led by the usual duo of Steven Sulkin and Jordan Hebert, who took second and third on the day. The two Dukes were right on the heels of the eventual winner, Hoffman Estates Conant’s Jeff Thode, but couldn’t catch him in what turned out to be a very close 3A race.

RFF/Olympic Trials Film Review: The Long Green Line Showcases the York H.S. Distance Magic Scott Bush Jul 4, 2008

It was a long time coming, but The Long Green Line finally premiered at the U.S. Olympic Trials Thursday evening in front of a crowd of over 200 people. In 2005, the young men apart of the legendary York High School cross country team were followed throughout the season, as the cameras captured the highs and lows of the season and the high emotions that a cross country team goes through from August until early December. Losing two of their top stars in the back half of the season, having to play with top seven line-ups numerous times and living up to the fatherly embrace coach Joe Newton shows all his athletes made this film one that every high school athlete should watch during their summer training. Overall this film receives a 4.5/5 stars. Read inside for more movie recap and check out The Long Green Line website here.
