Let's be clear here... I'm not saying that the lad is the next Katelynne Hart. Yet. But Schlenker did run like a savvy veteran in her first state championship. She knew the electrical pace that Hart set was too hot for her. Still, to think a first-year runner could rock and roll with one of the best of all-time was amazing. Schlenker learned from the 18-second setback that she took at Naperville Twilight to Hart. Working with Alex Morris probably alleviated any nerves that she was feeling. Schlenker finally broke away from Morris with her tremendous leg speed deep inside the final quarter-mile to finish second in 16:07. It was the fastest time ever for a freshman; Schlenker is expected to run at the Nike Cross Midwest Regionals on 11/11.
