I remember the first time that I had a conversation with Alice. It was on the first big cross country weekend in early September at the Lake Park Invite. She had just finished second to Katelynne Hart by a considerable distance and was happy about it. Initially, that thought process was a bit strange to me. But as she continued on, she noted that maturity was the reason for a better and much smarter race. "Last year I tried to go out with [Katelynne] the first mile and I was dead for the entire race," she said at the time. Since that race on September 8, I have followed Abbott very closely and noticed that she has indeed matured. Her race at the state meet was a very good one in which she ran among the lead pack throughout the race and not stray away with a foolish move. Her confidence and maturity earned her a 9th place medal in 16:40.
