Former Neuqua Valley head coach Paul Vandersteen after an invite win in 2017, discusses the Neuqua Valley program branding

In distance running, Neuqua Valley has built a brand that many of its foes have unquestionably adopted. Brand equity is built on reputation and trust, making people and companies more willing to invest in associating with the brand. In sports terms, this means a program's reputation becomes valuable and trustworthy. Neuqua Valley is a great example: as a ranked program, it has become recognizable by developing successful runners such as Meek and Gudauskas.
Because the 'Cats showcase highly ranked distance runners, it has conceivably increased youth participation. When young athletes see runners like Meek and Gudauskas get recognition, they may want it for themselves too. Younger runners look up to top runners for their hard, consistent work day in and day out, inspiring future runners to put in the effort that leads to success. This creates a larger future talent pool for the program since participation was encouraged early.
In a recent sports participation survey, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) estimated that track and cross country are among the most heavily populated sports in the country, where cross country is the seventh most popular sport for boys and the eighth most popular sport for girls in the United States, with over 420,000 competitive student-athletes each year.

As the historical data above shows, Neuqua Valley usually places among the top-15 teams at the state meet, demonstrating its elite consistency. However, earning these results requires a huge personal investment, which is where the Wildcat's brand loyalty pays off. In cross-country, loyalty isn't measured by money, but by the countless miles during June and July's scorching heat, where seasoned varsity athletes often run 60-to-75-mile weeks to prepare for the season. This brand loyalty reflects the hard work that goes into the team's craft.
Neuqua Valley is positioned to stay competitive for years. Furthermore, when they step into their starting box at a competitive, challenging meet, their brand equity reflects their reputation among hundreds of runners lined up against them. Ultimately, long-term brand dominance isn't built overnight; it comes from consistency and hard work, making the Wildcats one of the best teams in Illinois. As runners and teams get deeper into the cross-country season, the work put in over the summer will be tested on the starting line of the IHSA State cross-country meet.
