Winnebago

Winnebago enters 2026 in a rebuilding phase after graduating an experienced senior class, but the Indians have plenty of young talent that could make them one of the more improved teams by the end of the season. With no juniors or seniors returning to the varsity lineup, nearly every race this fall will provide valuable experience for a youthful roster.

The team's future is centered around an impressive freshman class led by Blake Wishop, Ty Palmer, Kyle McCray, and Anthony Gomez, all of whom are expected to contribute immediately. The coaching staff is focused on developing consistency and establishing strong training habits, knowing this season could lay the foundation for future success.

While immediate expectations remain modest, Winnebago's young roster gives the program considerable long-term potential as these athletes gain varsity experience throughout the season.

Shelbyville

Shelbyville returns five varsity runners from last year's squad and will look to capitalize on that experience throughout the 2026 season. The Rams are led by senior Henry Woolery (15:33), who gives the team a proven front-runner capable of competing near the front of many invitationals.

Returning contributors seniors Silas Hicks (16:42), Warren Weekly (17:03), Jake Palmer (17:51), and sophomore Austin Hobbs (17:55) provide valuable experience, while senior Joao Ogawa and sophomore Landon Maxedon strengthen the team's depth.

With nearly the entire scoring lineup back, Shelbyville has an opportunity to continue improving throughout the fall and could challenge for a postseason berth if several runners take another step forward.

Cullom (Tri-Point)

Tri-Point returns one of the better front trios among the unranked teams and should remain competitive throughout the postseason. The Chargers are led by senior Allen Lucero (15:38), while senior Mitchell Woods (16:10) and junior Miguel Amador (16:11) give the program three experienced runners capable of scoring well in championship meets.

The biggest challenge will be strengthening the back half of the lineup. Senior Garrett Smolkovich and junior Rafael Campos return with varsity experience, while junior Alex VanHook and senior Lance Hummel add depth behind the scoring five.

If Tri-Point continues to develop its fourth and fifth runners, the Chargers have enough front-end talent to surprise teams throughout the postseason.

Rock Island (Alleman)

Alleman returns nearly its entire varsity lineup after another solid season and will look to continue building depth this fall. The Pioneers are led by experienced frontrunners, juniors Logan Kean (16:31) and Cristiano Saucedo (16:31), who provide a dependable one-two combination entering the season.

Returning scorers sophomore Leo Graf, senior Audey Hobert, and junior Ben DeBisschop give the team valuable continuity, while senior Owen Mathews and junior Julien Punkiewicz provide additional varsity depth.

With another year of experience together, the Pioneers have the opportunity to continue improving throughout the season and could move up the standings if the scoring spread continues to shrink.

Johnsburg

Johnsburg may feature one of the strongest individual runners in Class 1A. Junior Grady Smith (14:57) returns after another outstanding season and gives the Skyhawks a legitimate high all-state contender capable of finishing near the front of the state meet.

Joining Smith are experienced runners senior Micah Klos (16:01) and junior Cayden Moran (16:19), providing the team with an excellent front three. The continued development of junior Carson Klos and sophomore Richard Taylor-Terry, along with improved depth throughout the roster, will determine how high Johnsburg can climb as a team this season.

With one of the classification's elite low sticks, the Skyhawks remain a dangerous opponent capable of making noise in the postseason.

Prophetstown

Erie-Prophetstown returns all five scorers from last season and enters the fall with a veteran group eager to build upon last year's experience. The Panthers are led by junior Braeden Punke (16:25) and Nathan Punke (16:41), giving them a solid one-two combination up front.

Returning contributors Aidan Garcea, Elijah Franzen, and Elijah Foster round out the scoring lineup, while Jackson Tegeler and Chase Yount provide additional depth.

Experience should be one of Erie-Prophetstown's biggest strengths this season, and continued improvement from the middle of the lineup could make the Panthers a difficult postseason opponent.

Lowpoint-Washburn

Lowpoint-Washburn returns an experienced front three that should keep the Wildcats competitive throughout the season. Senior Caleb Scheirer (15:40) leads the team after an outstanding junior campaign, while senior Geno Addo (Mackie) (16:17) and junior Dierks Knepp (16:33) provide additional experience.

The Wildcats will rely on improvement from sophomores Mason Cochran and Philip Oltman to strengthen the back half of the scoring lineup. Senior Ben Rackow and junior Isaiah Keturi also return and will compete for varsity opportunities.

If the Wildcats can continue closing the gap behind their front three, they have the potential to climb throughout the season.

Eldorado

Eldorado returns one of southern Illinois' top frontrunners in senior Liam Roberts (15:54) and welcomes back nearly its entire varsity lineup from a season ago. Roberts will again anchor the Eagles after consistently leading the program throughout 2025.

Returning seniors Rodie Williams and Brady Chamberlain, junior Elias Horseman, and sophomore Joey Beecher give the team valuable experience, while sophomore Noah Hoffman and senior Brady Chamberland provide additional depth.

With another year of development together, the Eagles have the opportunity to continue improving as the season progresses.

Rockford (Boylan)

Rockford Boylan returns an experienced varsity lineup led by junior Lucas Stoffregen (16:42) and senior Dominic Canova (16:57). The Titans also bring back juniors Zach Nelson, Joshua Martorana, and Benton Bock, providing valuable continuity as they enter the new season.

Additional depth from sophomore Luis Medina Delgado and junior Tim Kelly should create healthy competition for varsity spots throughout the fall.

The Titans have a veteran foundation in place and will continue to develop together as the season unfolds.

Robinson

Robinson returns an experienced group that will look to continue making progress this season, having brought back nearly its entire scoring lineup. Senior Wyatt Herrington (16:40) and junior Jason Tingley (16:45) headline the returning group, while juniors Kaden Pasero, Austin Carter, and sophomore Krosby Goebel complete the projected scoring five.

Additional depth from junior Nikolas Antes provides the Maroons with another experienced option as the season progresses.

With another year of varsity experience throughout the lineup, Robinson has an opportunity to continue moving forward and challenge for improved postseason results.

#25 Sherrard

Sherrard rounds out the preseason rankings after returning a veteran group that gained valuable experience competing at a high level last season. The Tigers bring back four of their five scorers and will look to take another step forward throughout the fall.

Leading the way is senior Alex Belha (15:46), followed by experienced returners senior Payton Summers (16:26) and junior Dominic Fahrenkrog (16:27). Senior Braiden Krahl (17:26) and junior Mason Schnell (18:05) round out the returning scoring five, while sophomore Hunter Shemek and senior Brayve Wakeland provide additional depth.

The Tigers have a solid veteran foundation entering the season, and continued improvement from the middle of the lineup could allow them to climb the standings as the year progresses.

#24 Harvest (Christian Academy)

Harvest Christian Academy returns a proven front-running duo that should once again keep the Lions competitive throughout northern Illinois. Juniors Immanuel Nunez (15:31) and Gus Berry (15:54) provide a strong one-two combination capable of scoring well against quality competition.

Returning varsity contributors juniors Ezra Gonzalez (16:36) and Jeremy Potter (16:42) strengthen the middle of the lineup, while the continued development of the fifth scoring position will be key to the team's success this season. Junior AJ Gomez and senior Luca LoDolce also return and will compete for important varsity roles.

If Harvest Christian can continue building depth behind its experienced front four, the Lions have the pieces to make another strong postseason push this fall.

#23 Pleasant Plains

Pleasant Plains may have graduated key contributors, but the Cardinals still return four members of last year's state qualifying squad and welcome an impressive freshman class that should strengthen the program immediately. After overcoming injuries to reach the state meet last fall, expectations remain high for another postseason appearance.

Returning veterans senior Braeden Galloway (16:30), junior Jared Long (16:33), sophomore Charlie Willenborg (16:35), senior Ty Copeland (17:21), and senior Mykah Bileck (17:21) provide a solid nucleus. Coach Jared Driskell has been especially encouraged by Bileck's improvement following an outstanding track season, while Long's 4:52 performance in the 1600 meters suggests he could significantly improve upon last year's cross country personal best.

The biggest storyline may be the arrival of an exceptionally talented freshman class. Mason Solomon enters high school after running 4:51 for 1600 meters as an eighth grader, while Aiden Chipol owns a 5:09 personal best. Tyson Powell, an Illinois Middle School State qualifier, and Ellis Throckmorton also add quality depth to one of the program's largest teams in recent years.

Summer training has centered around integrating the newcomers with the returning upperclassmen while building toward another postseason run. With improved depth and a promising young class joining experienced veterans, Pleasant Plains has the potential to outperform its preseason ranking by October.

#22 Herscher

Herscher returns one of the better front trios in Class 1A and enters the season looking to build greater depth behind its top runners. The Tigers are led by sophomore Evan Benoit (15:45) and senior Jackson Kruse (15:52), giving them two athletes capable of competing near the front of major invitationals throughout the season.

Senior Owen Damptz (16:21) completes an impressive top three, while fellow seniors Connor Sharper and Michael Ringhofer return with valuable varsity experience. Juniors Connor Heck and Alex Gryz provide additional depth and will look to work their way into the scoring lineup.

If Herscher can continue developing the fourth and fifth positions throughout the fall, the Tigers have enough talent at the front to make a move up the standings by the postseason.

#21 Roxana

Roxana enters the 2026 season with an experienced core and enough returning talent to make another postseason push. The Shells return all five scorers from last year's lineup, giving them valuable continuity as they look to climb the Class 1A standings.

Leading the way is senior Easton Johnston (16:01), who narrowly missed breaking the 16-minute barrier at the state meet and returns as the team's unquestioned front-runner. Senior Noah Crump (16:17) provides a strong second option, while junior Rylan Bisby (16:51), senior Joshua Ervin (17:10), and junior Conrad Heigert (17:30) complete an experienced scoring five. Sophomores Jordin Akileh and Conner Price also return to provide additional depth throughout the season.

With every scoring runner back, the Shells have the opportunity to make significant gains this fall if the middle of the lineup continues to improve and closes the gap on the team's front pair.

#20 Fairfield

Fairfield quietly returns its entire scoring lineup after another solid season and could emerge as one of Southern Illinois' biggest surprise teams. The Mules bring back all five scorers, giving them valuable experience as they enter the 2026 campaign.

Leading the way are seniors Treyton Lewis (16:15), Ashton King (16:40), Skylar Bladel (16:48), Kanyen Lingafelter (16:57), and Jarret Vaughan (17:09). Junior Morgan Spina and senior Vance Vanway also return to provide additional varsity depth.

With every scorer back and another year of development ahead, Fairfield has an opportunity to take a significant step forward as the season progresses and could challenge for another postseason berth if the pack continues to improve together.

#19 Rockford (Lutheran)

Rockford Lutheran returns a pair of experienced frontrunners and enough varsity experience to remain competitive throughout northern Illinois. The Crusaders are led by senior Kyle Enke (15:20) and junior Jacob Schroeder (15:46), giving them one of the stronger one-two combinations in the region.

Returning contributors junior Levi Mikel (16:46), senior Noah Bramble (17:09), and senior Douglas Johnson (17:42) complete the projected scoring five, while senior Elias Richard and junior Kent Pedersen provide additional depth.

With an experienced front pack returning, Rockford Lutheran's success this season will depend on continued development from the middle of the lineup as the team looks to move up the standings throughout the postseason.

#18 Paris

Paris returns one of its strongest senior classes in recent memory and enters the fall believing a return trip to the state meet is well within reach. Four of the Tigers' top five runners are seniors, giving this team a wealth of experience and leadership as they pursue one of the program's biggest goals.

Leading the charge is senior Harrison Hays, who owns a 15:17 personal best, qualified for the state meet in cross country last fall, and later earned a berth in the Class 1A 3200-meter run during track season. Fellow senior Nathan Fonner (16:00) provides another dependable front-runner, while Grayson Craffets (16:43), Gage White (17:14), and sophomore Jorden Guillen (17:32) round out the returning scoring five.

One of the state's most exciting freshmen could also make an immediate impact. Charlie Sabens arrives after earning junior high All-State honors with a fourth-place finish at the state meet, breaking the school middle school record in the 1600 meters with a 4:43, and qualifying for New Balance Nationals. Coach Missy Tingley believes Sabens has already shown during summer workouts that he could compete for a spot in the team's top five.

The Tigers have enjoyed outstanding participation throughout the summer, with the senior class continuing to set the standard for work ethic and leadership. If the returning veterans continue progressing and Sabens develops as expected, Paris has the pieces necessary to challenge for a state berth this November.

#17 Byron

Byron returns to the season after making its second consecutive trip to the IHSA State Finals and brings back a veteran group eager to continue that postseason streak. The Tigers may not have the headline star of some of the teams ranked ahead of them, but their depth and experience give them an opportunity to continue climbing throughout the fall.

Returning leaders junior Michael Muzzarelli (16:12), senior Braden Dietrich (16:43), junior Gavin Early (16:22), senior River Wygant (17:13), and senior Conner Welt (16:44) headline a group that gained valuable state meet experience last season. Coach Mike McHale also believes freshman Henry Hazzard will immediately become one of the team's top five runners after an outstanding middle school career.

The coaching staff believes as many as six athletes could break the 16-minute barrier before the season concludes, highlighting the team's overall depth and potential. That optimism has been fueled by another productive summer of training in which Byron's top runners consistently put together quality work.

If the Tigers continue developing throughout the season, another state appearance appears well within reach, with the potential to improve upon last year's finish.

#16 Rockford (Christian)

After a remarkable third-place finish at last year's Class 1A State Finals, Rockford Christian once again enters the season with expectations of competing among the state's elite. Although graduation claimed several key contributors, the Royal Lions return one of the top individual runners in the classification along with a program culture that consistently develops talent throughout the season.

Leading the way is returning All-Stater senior Blake Lindberg, who posted a 15:15 personal best and has established himself as one of the premier runners in northern Illinois. Behind Lindberg, seniors Mason Brock and Liam Hattoon, sophomore Noah Myers, junior Kolton Cortese, and sophomore Landon Opperman all return with valuable varsity experience, giving Rockford Christian a strong mix of veteran leadership and young talent.

Freshman Evan Meyers headlines the incoming class after an outstanding middle school career and is expected to challenge for varsity immediately. Coach Randy Moore continues to emphasize daily growth over outcome-based goals, a philosophy that has helped produce one of the state's most consistently successful small-school programs.

The Royal Lions have enjoyed another excellent summer of training with outstanding attendance, strong consistency, and a team culture built around accountability and encouragement. While replacing a state trophy team is never easy, Rockford Christian has enough returning talent to once again find itself competing near the front of the Class 1A field in November.
