Apr. 30, 2011 -
A contingent of North Central College female student-athletes made their way to Indianapolis, Ind., in early April, attending the 2011 NCAA Winning Careers in Athletics seminar.

Representing the Cardinals were student-athletes Staci Babb, Alexis Hurley, and Alicia Torimoto (volleyball), Mallory Carr and Alyssa Gaudio (golf), Kala Bingham (cross country/track & field), and Liz Koet (soccer).

The two-day seminar's goal was to inform female students about careers in collegiate athletics. Coaching and athletic administration jobs were discussed, as well as skills and tools needed to network and build up one's career. The seminar offered panels and informational sessions which answered many of the young women's questions.

The panel with Celia Slater, Executive Director of the NCAA Women Coaches Academy, discussed “real time jobs” covering professional women with careers in college athletics. By asking questions, Bingham gained valuable insight, inquiring about career opportunities in graphic design, her intended field.

“The Q & A panel gave me a way to ask whatever was on my mind,” said Bingham. “I asked about the graphic design careers involved with the NCAA and got some great information.”

As a perk to the seminar, the attendees were brought to the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship to see the University of Notre Dame play Texas A & M University for the title. They were brought behind the scenes to see the coordination, communication and details that go into a NCAA Championship event.

The seminar continued early the next day to discuss how one goes about planning their career in athletics. Torimoto really valued this session because speakers Scott McGowan and Greg Hobbs “went through realistic scenes of what it is like to be in an interview.”

Of the seminar, Torimoto said, “I would highly recommend other women who are interested in a career in athletics attend this program.”
