WHEATON, Ill. (Apr. 13, 2011)-- Winning six events and tallying three provisional qualifiers, the North Central College women's track & field squad captured the team title at the Wheaton College Twilight Invitational on Wednesday night at McCully Stadium.

The Cardinals bested the six-team field, amassing 173.5 points. The University of Chicago was second (135 points) followed by College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin rivals Carthage College (122.5), Wheaton (114) and Illinois Wesleyan University (71).

Amanda Laesch shaved almost 19 seconds off her 5,000-meter time from the season-opening First Chance Invitational, winning the event and breaking her own school record after clocking a provisional qualifying time of 17:14.12. Lauren Hooks was third, clocking an 18:20.03.

North Central had a great showing in the sprinting events with Sheila Walsh winning the 400-meter dash in a provisional qualifying time of 57.06 while Lauren Brightmore was second in 57.55. The two sprinters teamed up with Krista Cota and Linnea Higgins to close out the meet with a provisional qualifying effort in teh 4x400-meter relay, clocking a 3:53.22 to place second. Kayla Murphy raced to the win in the 200-meter dash, crossing the tape in 25.28 while placing third in both the 100-meter dash (12.54) and pole vault (10 feet, 6 inches).

Melissa Savino won the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 15.28 with Molly Gstalter securing second place (15.76). Savino additionally won the long jump with a leap of 17' 5 1/2".

Carolyn Kalafut captured the pole vault, clearing 10' 11 3/4". Michelle Criscione placed second in the high jump, clearing 5' 1 3/4" while Kristine Zizis was runner-up in the javelin throw with a heave of 104' 6". Cota placed second in the 800-meters, clocking a 2:15.42 while getting third place finishes from Basheeba Mays in the triple jump (34' 7 1/2") and Chelsea Armstrong in the hammer throw (137' 2").

The Twilight Meet was originally scheduled for Saturday but was bumped up to Wednesday due to the threat of inclement weather. North Central returns to action on Friday, April 22, traveling to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational.
