Spartan men finish second at NAC Indoor Championships

Schmitt set two school records at the NAC indoor championships for AU.

The Aurora University Spartan men's indoor track and field team finished second in the 2011 Northern Athletics Conference Indoor Championships picking up 121 points in a strong showing.

Freshman T.J. Jackson continued an excellent start to his career, capturing the NAC men's freshman of the meet. He won the 400-meter dash with a school-record time of 51.65, finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.89 and was third in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.72. His preliminary run time of 6.71 set a school record.

AU's men had 12 top-three finishes in the 16 events and broke four school records in the process.

In addition to Jackson's two school records, junior Drew Schmitt broke two school records, finishing third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:04.86 and third in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:13.37.

Spartans who took home top-three finishes included sophomore Mark Sulkin who finished second in the mile run with a time of 4:29.55 and third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:01.99; freshman Pete Claus finished second in the shot put with a throw of 13.81 meters; senior Jeff Fellers finished second in the pole vault with a vault of 3.94 meters; the 4x400 meter relay team finished second with a time of 3:33.30; and the distance medley relay team finished second with a time of 11:02.96. Sophomore Eric Capshaw finished third in the shot put with a throw of 13.65 meters.

Next action for the Spartan men's indoor track and field teams comes on Friday, March 4, 2011, when they compete in the North Central College "Last Chance" NCAA qualifier. Meet time is set for 5:00 p.m. in Naperville, Ill.
