This Week's Nominees:
Joseph Frierdich, Carbondale (H.S.): Won the discus at the Winston Brown Meet of Champions with a throw of 196-5.25, topping a field of 28 competitors. The sophomore ranks #1 in the country for his class.
Janardie Turner, Rockford (Jefferson): Swept five events across two meets, winning the 110m hurdles in 13.56 at the Rockford Christian Invitational and taking the 300m hurdles (37.99), long jump (22-11.5), 100m (10.75), and 200m (21.91) at the Jefferson Co-Ed Tri. The junior ranks as the top underclassman in Illinois in both the 110m hurdles and long jump.
Oreoluwa Sobodu, Carpentersville (Dundee-Crown): Posted the week's fastest 100m time in Illinois with a 10.44 victory at the Bear Invite, then doubled back to win the 200m in 21.69.
Gavyn Cothern, Olney (Richland County): Claimed victories in the long jump (23-8.5) and triple jump (42-6.5, 2nd place) at the Winston Brown Meet of Champions, then added a high jump win at 6-5.5 at the Mattoon Boys Invite. His long jump mark topped the week's competition statewide.
D'Mario Jackson, Danville (H.S.): Turned in the state's top 200m time of the week with a 21.47 victory at the Mattoon Boys Invite, where he also won the 400m in 49.01. The junior added a 100m win in 10.84 at the Boys Maroon Dual.
Owen Horeni(Yorkville): Already the state leader in the 800m (1:50.25), Horeni competed and won the main event Mile at the Distance Night in Palatine in 4:11.47. He crossed the 1600m in 4:09.77. Both marks are #1 in the state.
Philip Cupial(Downers Grove North): It may have been a one-and-done situation this year in the 2-mile for the state's best distance runner. At the Distance Night in Palatine, in an event that Cupial rarely runs, the standout senior carved out a state-leading 8:59.04 winner and meet record. Cupial clocked the 3200m en route in 8:55.77.
Zach Born (Metamora): Competed against an outstanding championship main event 800m field at the Distance Night In Palatine. It was a banner day for Born, who ran a personal best and IL#2 1:52.48.
