CHICAGO – Chicago State men's cross country opened its 2010 season on Sept. 4 with a good showing at the UIC Home Opener at Horsetail Lake in Palos Hills, Ill.
Other teams that competed with the Cougars in the meet were the host Flames, Milwaukee, Green Bay and Saint Xavier.
Sophomore Matthew Jordan (Suffield, OH/Field) (Mogadore, Ohio) paced CSU in the 4.1 mile race as he captured a top-15 finish for the second year in a row in a season-opening meet by finishing 12th with a time of 21:27.5, setting a personal-best record in the course.
In his first collegiate cross country race for the Cougars, junior Michael Chew (Klang Selangor, Malaysia/Taylors University College) (Klang Selangor, Malaysia) placed 43rd with a PR time of 25:46.9, while freshman Jeremy Anderson (Springfield, IL/Lanphier) (Springfield, Ill.) posted a 44th-place finish thanks to setting a PR after crossing the finish line at a time of 26:35.2.
Also posting a PR time in the race was junior Uri Kuyoro (Harvey, Ill.), who finished 45th at a time of 28:47.2. Seniors Earnest Jones (Chicago, IL/Proviso West) (Chicago, Ill.) and Daniel Fleming (South Holland, IL/Thornwood HS) (South Holland, Ill.) finished the race in 47th and 48th place after recording times of 39:06.4 and 39:07.7, respectively.
“This is a nice start. The guys ran with a purpose. We must continue to work hard and keep improving,” said CSU head coach Wayne Holloway.
The Cougars return to action this Saturday as they head to DeKalb, Ill., to compete in the Northern Illinois Huskie Open beginning at 12:15 p.m.
