Chicago State Women’s Track & Field Signs Jaya Emerson for 2010-11

Chicago State women's track and field announces the addition of Jaya Emerson for the 2010-11 season

CHICAGO – Chicago State University (CSU) women's track and field head coach Diana Muhammad announces the signing of thrower Jaya Emerson (Charlotte, N.C./Hopewell) (Charlotte, N.C.), who will join the Cougars this fall and have four years of eligibility.

“Jaya is going to be a valuable asset to our Lady Cougars Women's Track and Field program. Her athletic career has been successful and she brings a wealth of individual drive and tenacity to the sport,” Muhammad stated. “We look forward to welcoming her to CSU and know that she is one of the main ingredients in rebuilding our team.”

Emerson concluded her prep career at Hopewell High School in Huntersville, N.C., this past spring as one of the top throwers in the state as she finished second in the discus and sixth in the shot put at the N.C. Class 4A State Championships after placing third in the discus in 2009.

She also placed second at the N.C. 4A West Regional meet in both events, captured her third straight I-MECK Conference title in the discus and won her second consecutive I-MECK title in the shot put. Her personal best marks are 139-5 in the discus and 40-3 in the shot put, which are also school records at Hopewell.

Emerson was a four-time All I-MECK honoree for Hopewell – three times in the discus (2008-10) and once in the shot put (2010) – and garnered Female Athlete of the Year accolades from the Huntersville Herald newspaper. In addition, she claimed First Team honors in the discus and Second Team accolades in the shot put from the Charlotte Observer newspaper.

Muhammad will announce more signings later this month.
