2010 Spring Academic All-CCIW Selections

July 14, 2010 – North Central College recently announced its winners of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Jack Swartz Academic All-Conference Awards for spring 2010, as well as its 64 Academic All-CCIW honorees for the spring season. North Central's Jack Swartz honorees for the spring are senior track and field athlete Jake Winder and senior softball player Kara Reid .

The Jack Swartz Award, named after the former Wheaton College tennis coach and athletic director and CCIW Commissioner, honors one male and one female individual from each of the eight CCIW institutions each season for combining academic and athletic excellence.

Winder, a physical education major, finished the spring with his third individual national championship in the men's pole vault, clearing 16 feet, 11 inches to add his first outdoor championship to the 2009 and 2010 indoor national titles. His performance at the national meet helped propel North Central to the team national championship as well, giving the Cardinals a sweep of the NCAA Division III cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field national championships in the same academic year for just the second time ever.

Winder cleared an outdoor personal-best height of 18'0 1/2" at the Chicagoland Outdoor Championships, establishing a new North Central record, and placed second in the pole vault at the Drake Relays. He recently competed at the USA Track and Field Outdoor National Championships, also held at Drake University.

Reid, who recently graduated with a degree in sport management, was a First Team All-CCIW selection for the second straight year after starting 40 games at second base for the Cardinals. She batted .312 with 12 doubles and posted a fielding percentage of .950 as North Central finished with an overall record of 32-14 and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships for the second time in three years.

In 162 career games, Reid hit .342 with 71 runs scored and 114 runs batted in, and finished with a career fielding percentage of .962. She ranks second in school history in career runs batted in, fourth in home runs (8) and fifth in doubles (40).
