The weekly downstate athlete spotlight highlights athletes from central and southern Illinois who have had great performances that deserve recognition.

Patrick Peterson - Dunlap HS

Grade: Sophomore

Event: Shot Put 17.74m (58-2.5)

Performance Highlight: Maybe the individual performance of the meet at the high-powered Charger invite came from sophomore Patrick Peterson from Dunlap, who launched a 58-2.5 put that gave him the victory over some big names!  

Sophie Rentmeister - Chatham (Glenwood) 

Grade: Junior

Event: 800m Run- 2:18.96

Performance Highlight: After a breakout cross-country season, Sophie Rentmeister returned to the track, where she has had massive success in her career.  She competed at the Illinois Top Times Qualifier meet at Illinois College and set a brand-new indoor PB, running 2:18.96 and taking the victory.  We will see if she can improve on this time as she competes at Nike Indoor Nationals this weekend.  

Jaiduan Cranford - Metamora 

Grade: Senior

Event: 60m Dash- 6.74; 6.84

Performance Highlight: Cranford bursts onto the scene this week, running a blazing 6.74 at the Cogdale Invite (Illinois State) and then backing that up on Saturday at the Charger Invite in Champaign, taking down some very big names.  Very impressive performances in the short sprints for the senior from Metamora.  

Damir Harris - Normal (Community) West

Grade: Junior 

Event: 60m Dash 6.93, 200m Dash 21.77

Performance Highlight: Damir Harris had two breakout performances at the Coach Basting invite on Saturday. Harris, who is well known for his exploits in the 400, won the 60m dash in a lean over some great athletes, and dominated the 200 to run a Illinois #4 performance.  

McKenzie Doe IIIChatham (Glenwood) 

Grade: Senior

Event: High Jump 2.05m (6-8.75)

Performance Highlight: McKenzie Doe III remains in the spotlight this week, notching another personal best in the high jump at the Coach Basting Invite. Doe had some incredible attempts at 6-11 as well and could be the next jumper in Illinois to approach the 7-0 barrier.  

Jamia Esther - Danville

Grade: Sophomore

Event: 60m Dash 7.46, 200m Dash 24.64

Performance Highlight: Jamia Esther was a triple winner at the Charger Invite, taking victories in the 60m dash, 200m dash, and the 4x200 relay.  The sophomore from Danville continues to put up impressive performances this indoor season and looks to lead a resurgent Danville squad.  

Isaiah Whitaker - Bloomington (Central Catholic)

Grade: Senior

Event: Pole Vault 5.2m (17-1)

Performance Highlight: At the Coach Basting Invite, Isaiah Whitaker brought the crowd to their feet on multiple occasions on Saturday in both the pole vault and by anchoring the victorious 4x400 relay and holding off Springfield ace Mekhi Newman.  Whitaker established his best vault of the season, going 17-1.
