MileSplit IL Breakthrough Athlete: Ainsley Carter

A jubilant Ainsley Carter reflects on her performance at the Chicago Public League Select Meet

The first in a weekly series for the 2026 indoor and outdoor seasons, we will profile a deserving athlete.

In our first edition, the spotlight goes to Chicago Lane junior Ainsley Carter. A solid and talented athlete coming up through the middle school ranks, Carter has been able to traverse the highs and lows of high school athletics.

As a freshman, Carter bolted herself into the position of the Champion's premier cross country runners, finishing third overall in the CPL Championship. She would conclude the 2023 season as the #2 runner at the Lake Park Sectional.

On the track, Carter continued to show promise as a freshman, running respectable times: 800 (2:27.96), 1600 (5:37.48), and 3200 (12:03.01). She took fifth in the 800 at sectionals and missed qualifying for the state meet by less than two seconds.

Carter's sophomore year presented a number of challenges, including injuries and pressure to succeed in an emerging program. She advanced to the state meet in cross country, while the experience was notable, she was not content with it.

Moving on to the spring of 2025, Carter's training focused more on a 2-miler, but the team plan somehow diverted her toward the 4x800m relay. The plan ultimately worked out, as Carter earned her first all-state honors, finishing with her teammates in 8th place with a time of 9:16.57.

Carter reflected, refreshed, and got ready for her current junior season with an outstanding summer training session. She would win a conference title, set a personal best in the 3-mile (17:34), and perform well at the state championship, placing 58th in 17:39.

The 2026 indoor track season is off to a roaring start for Carter, who set a school indoor 1600m record in 5:00.97. That remarkable performance currently ranks #6 in the state. In addition, she clocked 2:16.66 in the 800m, also ranking #6 statewide.

Carter has plans to compete in the biggest meets of the season, like the New Balance Nationals Indoor Championships, slated for March 13-15 in Boston. This will undoubtedly be the biggest challenge of Carter's career, and hopefully a stepping stone to greatness.
