Detweiller Park had been rocking all day with three races in the books, but the overcast skies began to drop a few raindrops. Some fans started to wonder if it would impact the course conditions, which could stall fast times.
As expected, pre-meet favorites, Chicago St. Ignatius standouts senior Annika Swan and sophomore Allison Shutler got out front. They established the pace and tempo of the race in the opening half mile.
At the first mile checkpoint, Maci Ermitage (So., Downers Grove North), Avery Hacker (Jr., Batavia), and Karlin Janowski (So., Elmhurst York) joined Swan and Shutler in the 5:18 range.
Ermitage and Shutler were out front at the halfway point, running a fast 8:02. Meanwhile, the team battle saw defending champion Barrington leading the way. The Fillies packed things up a little better than last weekend at the Hoffman Estates Sectional. The scoring split was 18 seconds from Victoria Tarara (So) to Madison Miles (Sr). A rejuvenated York team, which won the Lake Park Sectional, was in a trophy position alongside Lake Zurich and Prospect.
Shutler put on a surge and separated herself from Ermitage at the second mile in 10:44. Janowski took charge of second in 10:46. Swan lost a few steps, as did Hacker, but Prospect moved into second over Lake Zurich for the second-place trophy.
Things got interesting just past the final half mile. Shutler had the lead, and she appeared to be in control. However, with a quarter-mile to go, the public announcer, Matt Piescinski, described things this way. "Janowski starts her kick and is going after Shutler."
On the final 250 meters, which is an incline, Shutler ran out of gas; this would ignite Janowski, who blazed past her into the finish in a new personal best and class-leading 16:10. Hacker and Ermitage also dipped by Shutler in 16:13 and 16:19, respectively. Shutler and Swan took home fourth and fifth place, running 16:22 and 16:33.
Barrington turned back MSL rival Prospect for their second title in a row. York was third, earning another state trophy for the coffers.
