CHICAGO – The Chicago State men's track and field posted 10 top-ten finishes and nine personal records en route to placing seventh at the second-annual Great West Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 26-27 at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D.
Junior Daniel Fleming (South Holland, IL/Thornwood) (South Holland, Ill.) led the way for CSU with four top-ten finishes in the meet. Fleming placed second in the heptathlon for the second consecutive year after producing a personal-best scoring total of 4,395 points. He finished first in his heat for the 60-meter dash while setting individual PR marks in the 1,000-meter run (3:03.72 – second), shot put (33-11.50 – third) and 60-meter hurdles (8.94 – third).
In addition to the heptathlon, Fleming also finished fourth in the long jump at a mark of 22-0.75, fifth in the pole vault at a personal-best jump of 12-1.50 and tied for seventh in the high jump at 6-0.75.
Sophomore Jonathan Majors (Richton Park, Ill.) followed Fleming by recording three top-ten showings of his own. He captured sixth place in the long jump with a leap of 21-7.50, placed seventh in the 60m after posting a time of 7.00 in the prelims and posted a jump of 39-5 to finish ninth in the triple jump.
Sophomore Jershawn Dubose (Chicago, Ill.) recorded a PR time of 8.76 in the prelims of the 60m hurdles before placing seventh in the finals with a time of 8.85, while fellow classmate Uri Kuyoro (Harvey, Ill.) captured a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter dash after placing third in the prelims with a time of 50.76.
In the 5,000-meter run, freshman Matthew Jordan (Mogadore, OH/Field) (Mogardore, Ohio) recorded a personal-record time of 16:04.95 to finish 13th in the race and junior Earnest Jones (Chicago, IL/Proviso West) (Chicago, Ill.) placed ninth in the long jump with a mark of 21-0.50.
The Cougars also received three personal records in the shot put, led by junior Xavier Williams (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech)' (Chicago, Ill.) PR throw of 34-11.75 which placed him 14th in the event. Sophomore Kasey Lewandowski (Milwaukee, Wis.) recorded a personal-best throw of 34-2.25 in his first-ever collegiate meet to finish 15th and sophomore Tyler Turner (Joliet, Ill.) posted a PR throw of 30-2.
“The guys fought like warriors out there and I'm proud of them,” said CSU head coach Wayne Holloway. “We are going to take a little time off to recuperate and prepare for the outdoor season.”
