-Girls' Chicago Public League track and field Dominance comes in bundles. It started with the mighty Morgan Park squads that legendary coaches Derrick Calhoun and Monica Dawson commanded. The Mustangs won 15 consecutive titles from 1988 to 2004, when Lane Tech broke the streak. Lane then ripped off five titles in seven years before handing the mantle to Whitney Young. The Dolphins, a force on the state level, have won nine CPL crowns in a row and are a heavy favorite to make it 10. Head coach Phillip Wallace is a great guy, but he will not take any prisoners on the battlefield.

Angelena Bullocks is one of the best to do it in the CPL-

The soon-to-be University of Minnesota Gopher Angelena Bullocks aims to imprint her legacy on the minds of many enthusiastic CPL track and field champions. The superstar from Whitney Young is the defending champion in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, to lower the meet records and possibly put them out of reach for the foreseeable future.

Aside from the 4x100 relay, Bullocks will also compete in the long jump for the first time in a championship format. Although this appears to be an experiment or audition for the upcoming state series, Bullocks has chipped away to a personal best 18'6." However, the focus is on the track, and we could see something sick like 11.45 and 23.80 wind, legal or not. If this is the case, the crowd will be in an uproar!

The best of the best outlook-
Jordan Hamb appears to be waking up like a pleasant late spring in the upper Midwest. The standout junior from South Shore is competing at her best in recent weeks. Hamb enjoyed an outstanding 2024 outdoor track and field season filled with many honors. She is the defending 2A state champion in the 100HH and triple jump. In addition, she collected All-American honors in the long jump (19'4") and Heptathlon. So there is no question that she is a multiple threat. She will be the top seed in the long jump (19'0") and 100HH (14.52) and among the best in the triple jump. One key race will be the short hurdles against rival Simone Bernard (Sr., Whitney Young). It could be one for the ages.

Layla Bonilla (Sr., Whitney Young) is the favorite in the TJ (38'11") and HJ (5'5"i). She and teammate Courtney Burt (Jr), who won the indoor city title, topped 39 feet during the indoor season and may be the best pair in the state. Although the field has strong contenders like Kee'lani Whitlock (Sr., Kenwood) and Hamb, it will be hard to displace the Dolphins duo.

The weather is expected to be pleasant for the relays. If so, watch for Whitney Young to go HAM in the 4x100. According to coach Wallace, the IL#2 46.69 from 4/23 was not a perfect display of what a fast quartet should run. They continued to have issues last weekend at New Trier, dropping the baton, which involved Bullocks. We could see a meet record and state-leading performance if they can clean that up.

Lane Tech is expected to dominate the distance arena, including the 4x800, 1600, 3200, and 800. Kate Murray (So., Payton) won the indoor 800m title decisively in 2:17.12. No one else has broken 2:20, and she could be solo again.
