Katelyn Lehnen is one of the potential young stars ready to shine in Bloomington

When the IESA officially canceled their state championship series several months ago, a parent-coaching force led by Doug Roberts went into warp speed to make sure that junior high kids around the state would have an opportunity to compete at the highest level possible. Born out of the planning is the Illinois Junior High Elite Invitational and over 2000 youngsters will descend on Bloomington High School.
Who to watch for:
The state's top middle-school female sprinter is eighth-grader Katelyn Lehnen out of Glenwood Middle School in Chatham-Glenwood. She has run 25.42 (US#2) and 58.71i. She will be the one to watch for sure. Look for the matchup against seventh-grader Kaylah Parks out of Streamwood but representing the Aurora Flyers TC in the off-season. Parks lit up the high school realm during this past indoor season in the 60m (7.80) and 25.87 (200m). It will be interesting to see how things shape out.
Lehnen's teammate Ally Knudson has made a few headlines of her own in the 800m and particularly in the 1600m with a time of 5:19. She will be on full display in both events.
On the boy's side, keep an eye on Benjamin Gibson of Latin Junior High School. As one of the top rising middle-school distance boys, Gibson ran 4:36.29 during the indoor season and 2:02.17 in the 800m last weekend. He is ready to roll!
