There was a quiet and cool demeanor about Micah Wilson two years when he won the frosh-soph two-mile at the Lake Park Invitational. The 10:17 time wasn't even a record but rather the look of confidence that he exuded after leading his team to a win. Wilson would eventually go on to run 14:59 and place 40th at the state championship- logging the top spot among freshmen.
Last year Wilson took a bigger leap among the elite corps. The primary goal was to assist his team in obtaining a state title. The Saints accomplished the amazing feat as well as taking fourth in the Team Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon. Along the journey was a sizzling 14:31.
2020 was a special year on my fronts. The pandemic was the centerpiece in all our lives. How would a high school junior who many fans placed at the top of their pre-season top dog list react?
Since the majority of the team's competition was locally conducted and in-flight style, this meant Wilson competed against himself or the clock. He won his first three races and placed second in two other ones including teammate Luke Schildmeyer.
As things unfolded during the second half of the season Schildmeyer would pull even and on several occasions slide in front. However, there would be no rivalry. During the season's most important races, Wilson gave up the championship flight seat to Schildmeyer. This gesture is something that many star athletes would have had a difficult time relinquishing. Wilson won the Lyons Sectional and placed second at the Shazam Championships in aggregate time (by two seconds). In the latter, Wilson had a plan even if it meant running completely solo in the penultimate flight. He wanted to make sure his team repeated as the best team in the land of Lincoln. The Saints won the title going away and the legend of Micah Wilson continues to grow.
