On Saturday, Wilmette (Loyola Academy) invited teams from its Chicago Catholic League conference to compete at its newly made home course. The course sits atop the plateau of a large hill, which not only provides for scenery but also hills throughout the race.

The boy's varsity race, starting at 9:30am, was the spotlight event of the day. It featured a team battle between 3A #18 Loyola Academy and 2A #2 St. Ignatius, both of which have a prominent rivalry. Individual standouts in this race included Spencer Werner of Loyola Academy and Liam Linnen of Chicago (St. Ignatius).

Werner took the race out fast and by the first mile in 5:01, he was already about 40 meters ahead of Linnen, who was in second place and had the rest of the top pack behind him.

Through the next two miles, Werner kept steadily increasing his gap, and by the time he approached the finish line, he had secured the win. He crossed the finish line in 15:48, with Linnen earning second in 15:58. Behind Linnen were three of his teammates, which enabled the Wolfpack to win over the ramblers 22-33. Their 24-second 1-5 split is impressive as well.

Later in the afternoon, it was time for the varsity girls to race. 3A #8 Loyola Academy's varsity "A-team" sat out the race since they had just raced spectacularly at the Palatine Quad the night before. This left it all up to 2A #16 St. Ignatius to have the best shot at winning the race.

Lexi Affolter of St. Ignatius was the immediate race leader and did not lose her position during the entirety of the 3-mile race. She hit the mile in around 6:04- 12 seconds back was Evelyn Rowan and Natalie Wagner of Chicago (Mother McAuley). Affolter kept her foot down and by the second mile, her lead increased to 45 seconds.

Unsurprisingly, through the finish, it was all Affolter, as she ran to a 19:43 win. 53 seconds back was her teammate Meghan Semmer in 20:36. As expected, the wolfpack won in 25 points over Mother McAuley, who racked up 54 points.

The Loyola Academy Invite was a great way for CCL teams to be surrounded by competition and engage in friendly local rivalries. Although the weather was near-perfect -- mid-50s and 60s -- the course was not a fast one. Congratulations to all athletes who competed at the meet!
