Class B Indoor Track & Field State Championship Preview

Brewer won the 2019 girls class b state title.


Defending champion Brewer comes into the state meet the favorite to defend their title. The Witches coming off a strong performance at the PVC-EMITL championship that saw them finish a close third are primed to hoist the championship trophy once again.

Leading the way for Brewer is the jumps squad who is seeded for 45 points in the meet. Sophomore Abby Stroup is the top seed in the long jump with her best of 17-0 1/4, the mark is almost a foot further than the rest of the field. Stroup is also the third seed in the triple jump. Her classmate Morgan Honey is the second seed in the triple jump (34-4), and third seed in the long jump. Honey is also the second seed in the hurdles. While in the high jump Brewer expects big points from defending champion Sophia Inman who is seeded second with a best clearance of 5-4 this winter. Junior pole vault Madison Gibbs is seeded third in the pole vault as well. Junior distance standout Olivia Mosca is expected to have a big day to help the Witches title hunt. Mosca is the top seed in the mile (5:21) & 2 mile (11:30.45)

Carly Warn has Winslow in a position for a podium finish, the junior is the top seed in the triple jump (34-11 3/4), and is the second seed in both the 55m dash (7.48) & long jump (16-1 3/4). The Black Raiders also have junior Olivia Tiner who is the third seed in the 400m (62.24) & fourth seed in the 2 mile (12:21.5).

Cony, York, Belfast, & Greely all are in contention for a podium finish as well.

Look for Junne Robertson-McIntire of Belfast who is the top seed in the 55m (7.46) & 200m (26.71). Cony is lead by a pair of sophomore 800m runners in Grace Kirk & Bri Harriman, they are the top two seeds, and will also run legs on the Rams relay. York counters with defending 200m champion Hayley Smith who ranks third best this winter, and Wildcat junior Phoebe Slovenski is the top seed in the vault (10-2). Greely is led by senior distance standout Marin Provencher.

Cape Elizabeth senior Darcy Cochran will be shooting for her fourth straight 55m hurdle title, she enters as the top seed. Last year's 800m champion Zoe Olson of MDI will be looking to win the 400m title this year, Olson enters with the top time of 61.75.

York won the 2019 Class B Boys State Title

On the boys side the Eagles of Ellsworth will be seeking their first title since 2002. They are coming off a win in the PVC-EMITL small school championship.

Junior Beck Deeny leads the Eagles into the state meet. Deeny is the top seed in the triple jump (42-10 3/4), and long jump 20-4, he'll also compete in the hurdles where he is one of three Ellsworth athletes seeded to score. Henry Scheff is one of those hurdlers as the junior is the top seed with his 8.36, while Jack Sandone is the third seed at 8.38. While sprinter Tulas Weaver is the top seed in the 200m (23.91), and also expected to score in the 55m dash.

Old Town, Belfast, Greely, Brewer & defending champion York will be looking to finish on the podium as well.

Old Town will look for freshman Corbin Flewelling for some key points, Flewelling is seeded second in the high jump (6-1), as well as the fifth seed in both the long and triple jumps. Jumper Elijah Veilleux is the third seed in the triple (41-8 1/4). While the 4x200m is within .15 of the top seed.

Belfast counters with Cole Martin in the 55m dash, the junior is the top seed at 6.69. He is the third seed in the long jump and will run a leg on the 4x200m relay. Greely is paced by distance runner Sam Wilson who is seeded second in both the mile & 2 mile, he could also run a leg on the second ranked 4x800.

Brewer has the top ranked 4x200m, plus shot put specialist Sean Neal (53-11) who ranks second, and Logan Geiser who is the second seed in the 800m.

Defending champion York won't go down without a fight, the wildcats will need a big day from junior Rhys Evans who is the top ranked high jumper (6-3), he a top hurdler as well. The high jump will be a key event as York has three seeded at or above six feet.

Boothbay senior Will Perkins is the top seed in mile (4:30.95) & 2 mile (10:09.89). Morse senior William Carrolton is the top ranked shot putter with a mark of 54-11 3/4, while Chris Koskinen of Yarmouth is the top ranked pole vaulter with a best of 13-6.
