CHSCA To Induct Roberts And Montoya To Hall Of Fame


PRESS RELEASE | The Colorado High School Coaches Association is proud to announce its Hall of Fame class for the year 2020. This is the 57th class to be inducted. 

The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2020 at the Radisson Hotel Denver Southeast 3155 S. Vaughn Way, Aurora, CO 80014. A reception will be held at 5:30 p.m. with the dinner and induction starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the event may be purchased at the CHSCA web site at www.colohsca.org.

Ben Montoya - Cross Country/Track & Field - Fountain Fort Carson

The 1973 graduate of Fountain Fort Carson High School returned home to lead the Cross Country and Track & Field Programs at the High School since 1986. In that tenure his teams won 6 team state championships in boy's track and field while claiming second twice. Under his tutelage 38 individuals stepped to the top of the podium to claim gold medals for the Trojans at the boys state track and field meet. 

After completing a stellar career in both Cross Country and Track and Field at Adams State University he stayed in the San Luis Valley. He coached the Track and Field teams at Center High School and then the Cross Country Teams at Antonito High School.

He received Coach of the Year honors from the Gazette Telegraph in 1987, 2015 and 2016, the Denver Post in 2010, the USA Track and Field 2015, and CHSAA 2011-12.

Ben is the husband of wife Vickie, father of Xavier and Isaac, and stepfather of Neva Archuleta and LeeAnn Isom.

Mark Roberts - Cross Country/Track & Field - Lyons 

Mark Roberts has stayed close to home since graduating from Niwot High School in 1984. He followed that up with degrees from the University of Colorado in 1989 and 95 and moved up the valley to teach and coach at Lyons. 

After getting his feet wet in the coaching arena at Niwot assisting in football, basketball, and track, Mark continued to work at Lyons. In 1996 he moved into the head cross-country coaching position taking over the boys and girls track and field programs in 2000. Since 2000 the boy's cross-country teams won six Sate Championships and were runners up six times. The girls have three titles and four second place trophies. In boys track the teams have claimed five State Championships with three runners up finishes. The girl's track teams claimed four titles and five runners up. 

Along with multiple Coach of the Year recognitions Roberts won the coveted Warren Mitchell award in 2018 from CHSCA. He also was a finalist for the 2018 National High School Athletic Coaches Association Girl's Track Coach of the Year Award. He has given of his time to speak at and secure speakers for the CHSCA Coaching Clinics. Roberts, along with Alan Versaw, worked at the request of CHSAA, to put together the schedule for the combined 2A-5A Colorado High School State Track Meet. He did the layout for the cross-country course at the CHSCA All-State Games. Roberts is a winner and a giver.

Roberts the family man has been married to Kim for 30 years and they are the grateful parents of Andrew (Annelise), Melissa (Alex), Miriam, Paul, Sarah, Isaac, Kathryn, John, Elizabeth, and David. They are proud grandparents of Seth, Alexander, Daniel, Shane and Ezekiel.
