Throwback Thursday: Lukas Verzbicas' 2010 Footlocker Repeat

Relive the 2010 Boys Footlocker National Championship race

Before you all start throwing around the latest G.O.A.T's (greatest of all-time), we have come in to save the day and refresh your memory of one such runner who is on the American Prep distance Mt. Rushmore. During his reign at Orland Park (Sandburg) HS in Illinois, Lukas Verzbicas was a man-child in the thick of the US distance renaissance. He did not lose a cross country race during the final two years of high school. To date, Verzbicas is the only runner to win the Nike Cross Nationals and Footlocker National titles in the same season.

Coming into the 2010 race, a supremely confident Lukas Verzbicas had been nursing a sore Achilles Heel as well as a tough win at Nike Cross Nationals just a weekend prior. Even as the heavy favorite, there was the talk of Indy North Central senior star Futsum Zeinasellassie coming in and actually dethroning Verzbicas. But remember that Verzbicas once said, "I think as long as I don't get too crazy [celebrating my NXN win] I will be ok." Verzbicas liked to have innocent fun outside the confines the running arena. There will never be another LUKAS VERZBICAS.
