Northern Illinois Big 12 Looks To Be Team Focused Racing

Team standings on the girl's side look to be decided, as #2 ranked Yorkville continues their path of destruction. Last year the Foxes scored a low 23 points to take first place. They later went on to place second at the IHSA 3A State Championships and even earn a trip to Nike Cross Nationals. The real race is for second place, with plenty of teams vying for that honor. The main duel will be between Kaneland and DeKalb. Last fall the Knights narrowly beat out the Barbs 80-89 for second. The two have only met one time prior this year at the Kaneland Eddington Invite where, much like on the boy's side, DeKalb came out on top. However, that was also a month ago, and the real race happens this Saturday. What many will fail to notice is how close Geneseo is in this team race. The Maple Leafs placed fourth last year with 95 points, only 6 points outside of third. At the Freeport Invite, Geneseo placed fourth, only 8 points behind Kaneland. Geneseo has the home court advantage this weekend, which could play into their hands as they attempt to surprise some people.

Individually, a lot could happen in this race. Last year's second place finisher Helena Kleronomos would be the obvious choice, but Kleronomos will have a large target on her back. Only three of the top 25 runners last year were seniors, meaning more eyes are on the hunt for the title. Katherine Olsen of DeKalb finished third last fall and looks for redemption during her senior campaign. Junior Rachel Richtman of Kaneland will be up towards the lead pack and senior Josie Brown from host team Geneseo will be looking to defend her home course. Brown has the advantage of training on these hills, which can really make a difference during race time. Also watch out for Emily Eberhart and Kailey Fox of Yorkville as they have performed great in recent weeks. Overall, the individual race will be an excellent way to end the era of NIB XII cross-country, so don't miss out!
