Richard Spring Invite Snap Recap

Watch Katelynne Hart finish up her devastating win at Detweiller

Peoria IL-

To say that it was a day at Detweiller Park is an understatement. Aside from hot and humid temps that reached 90F at the varsity boys game time, it was the bad wifi reception that kept fans from experiencing instant results gratification. But aside from the things that we cannot control were the number of great races. The sequence started with a trio of girls race followed by the boys. The Richard Spring Invite way as they say.

Katelynne Hart continues to impress even if she does it in a methodical like motion. The Glenbard West junior did not mess around with the competition, putting away the field with 2:32, 5:10, and 10:40 splits. The finish time was a crisp US #1 16:14 for three miles. Afterward, Hart made no mention of other girls stealing her shine and headlines last weekend. The girl's talent pool has restocked nicely as the emerging sophomore Alice Abbott of St. Charles East dropped a tremendous personal best 16:47 which thrusts her name into the pot of sub 17:00 performances on the young season. Abbott ran well throughout the race as the opening mile 5:23 was good enough to hold off Sam Poglitsch of Wheaton-Warrenville South and Aly Negovetich of Grant- both fellow underclassmen.

#2 Wheaton-Warrenville South knew they had a big target on their backs and they need all three miles in order to maintain their team title. It would not happen. The deep 60+ team field featured a ton of ranked teams and one of them was #7 Glenbard West who lost on a tie-breaker last year to the Lady Tigers. Hart's low stick win and teammate Katie Hohe taking 5th was too much to overcome. The final verdict was a 131-133 victory for the Hilltoppers.

The boys field also saw #1 Wheaton-Warrenville South as the favorite coming in. The Tigers would not disappoint. It was essentially over before it started. Just like the Wauconda Invite last week, the crew packed up immediately and ran together throughout the race. All five scorers were under 4:50 for the first mile. They maintained the solid pace for the next two miles to dominate a strong performance. Senior Scott Maison fresh off of taking the ACT last weekend paced four teammates under 15:00 running 14:48.

The winner though was junior Josh Methner of Hersey in 14:37. He was content on running with his peers for two miles in 9:47 before using the final mile to pull away from junior Ethan Kern of York who raced for the first time this season. Kern clocked a personal best 14:41. Senior Mathias Powell of Mahomet-Seymour, Maison, and the emerging junior Bob Liking of St. Charles East closed out the top five.
