Jenna Schwartz Kicks Off Summer With Sizzlin Running Journal

Jenna details winning her first state xc title last fall

Below is a caption of Jenna's two-week training progress:

Monday, July 2- My team meets for morning practices at our local park on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and evening practice on Tuesdays. Today I ran 7 miles with my teammates at a moderate pace. Finished the day with core.
Total Daily Mileage: 7 miles
Pace: 7:11

Tuesday, July 3- On Tuesday nights, my team meets for workouts that have earned the name "Terrible Tuesdays." Today my team ran 8x400 with a jogging break. The workout was meant to resemble a fartlek. I hit anywhere between 1:21-1:16 for the bulk of my 400s, and I finished the workout off with a 1:14. Rounded my day out with core.
Total Daily Mileage: 6 miles

Wednesday, July 4- Running the morning after a night workout can be tough, and today was no exception. It was VERY hot and humid, even at 8 A.M., and my team and I had a bit of a rough time trying to finish this run. We still put the miles in for the day, though! Finished the day with core and a little bit of light lifting, and I watched fireworks with my friends later!
Total Daily Mileage: 6 miles
Pace: 7:16

Thursday, July 5- I opted for a night run today, as I was spending most of my day on a college visit. When I got home, I ran an easy 7 while my dad rode his bike with me on the country roads by my house. Finished the day with core and hurdle drills.
Total Daily Mileage: 7 miles
Pace: Not timed

Friday, July 6- Fridays are usually my tempo days, so today I ran 7 miles with my dad and ran the last 2 miles of my run at tempo pace. I will eventually work my tempos up to 3-3.5 miles. Finished with core.
Total Daily Mileage: 7 miles

Saturday, July 7- Today was my day off from running, as it had been a couple of weeks since my last one and I was feeling a little tired. Did core and lifting.
Total Daily Mileage: 0 miles

Sunday, July 8- A few of my teammates and I met at my coach's house around 6:40 in the morning to get in our long run together. The boys decided to push the pace early in this run but I felt pretty good throughout the run. The weather was PERFECT as it was not 90 degrees with 90 percent humidity for once. Afterward, some of my team and I went to Bean Tree Cafe for breakfast and coffee!! #nonspons. Finished with core and swimming at the Y.
Total Daily Mileage: 9 miles
Pace: 6:54
Total weekly mileage: 42 miles

Monday, July 9- Met at Lakeview Park for summer running with the team. Got in a moderate 7 miles on a noticeably warmer day than the previous one. Finished with core.
Total Daily Mileage: 7 miles
Pace: 7:07

Tuesday, July 10- I could not make it to "Terrible Tuesday" practice at night, so I ran my hill workout alone early in the morning before it got too hot. We have a hill in Waterloo that is just shy of 300 meters and very, VERY steep. I ran 7 hills ranging anywhere from 1:08-1:05. Finished the workout with core and a little bit of lifting. Later I went to see Kesha and Macklemore with a few of my friends in St. Louis!
Total Daily Mileage: 6 miles

Wednesday, July 11- I had practice with my team in the morning, and I decided to turn my watch off once again and run by feel, as it was (surprise) very hot and humid once again. Rounded the day out with core. Total Mileage: 7 miles
Pace: Not timed

Thursday, July 12- I was busy pretty much all of today, so I got my run in before practice alone through my town. I got in a relatively easy 7 miles. Finished with core and hurdle drills.
Total Daily Mileage: 7 miles
Pace: 7:14

Friday, July 13- I was busy both early in the morning and at night, so I had to run at about 2 P.M. I decided to run my tempo on the treadmill. I ran 7 miles with the last 2 at tempo pace once again. Finished with core. Total Daily Mileage: 7 miles

Saturday, July 14- I ran an easy 6 miles with my dad in the morning before going to Athens to watch a few of my friends compete in a Milk Mile. I would like to use this social platform to inform readers that 2017 1A XC champ and future University of Illinois athlete Wyatt Mcintyre got last place in the Milk Mile. Rounded out my day with core and lifting.
Total Daily Mileage: 6 miles
Pace: Not timed

Sunday, July 15- Today I ran my long run with my friends at Carpenter Park in Springfield. The trails were shaded and VERY muddy. They were really nice, but I ran at an unspeakably slow pace. Finished the day with core and swimming at the Y.
Total Daily Mileage: 9 miles
Pace: Really slow
Total Weekly Mileage: 49 miles
