The First Edition With John Meyer Produces US#1 Effort

Lockport senior John Meyer is a track and field guy. The former basketball standout could have easily made his name in football when you consider his 6'6" 260+ lbs frame is ideal for the DL. But the one dubbed "Big John" is now focused ahead of some serious goals in 2018. Last year Meyer throw the shot put in the orbit 67-2 for an Illinois all-time record. We may see our first ever 70-foot effort outdoors. But the first set of goals will occur during the undercover season. This year we could see a personal record above his indoor best 64-4 which rated US#7 last season.

On Saturday at the U of Chicago Holiday Classic, Meyer wowed the onlookers during warmups were he tossed throws that landed beyond the ring. The official effort of the shot put was 61-1. The series went 58-5.5, 58.9.5, 55-11.25, 61-1.25. The University of Michigan signee will have more in store as the season progresses.

MEET RESULTS

The John Meyer training camp statement:

"John's meet went kind of as expected. He has had only had four throwing sessions in the ring and we have been doing mostly partial throws with a lot of overweight shots. So his timing was off a little. He did have about a 65' warmup throw but was a little tentative in ring in meet. He opened last year in January at 57'5" so he is significantly ahead of that already. He is 30lbs heavier than last year and significantly stronger. We think he is going through an adjustment period in his throwing to adjust to his bigger body."
