Danny Kilrea (Jr., Lyons Township HS; LaGrange IL)- It's hard to believe that Kilrea had only won two races coming into the regional championship. His only victories were at the Portage IN Invitational and WSC Silver meet. But the confidence in finishing second and third on several occasions was worth the wait. After finishing second in the state meet with a blistering time of 14:08, Kilrea's stock began to rise. He ran a very smart race by connecting with the early leaders who set a fast pace. Kilrea took the lead late in the final half-mile and strolled home in a meet record 14:51 (Lukas Verzbicas, Sandburg 2010- 14:53). Look for Kilrea to run another great effort in Portland... Kilrea may see himself as a reporter once his competition days are over. He is a copy editor for his school newspaper.
