Whitney Young Boys Make History At Niles West Sectional

Katelynne Hart took charge right away in her sectional victory

#2 Glenbard West came into this affair as the favorite despite holding out sophomore Katie Hohe.  A few weeks ago coach Paul Haas indicated that Hohe had not been feeling well followed by an injury. No problem. As it would be customary in virtually every race this season, freshman Katelynne Hart and junior Lindsey Payne set the race table. "The surrogates" took off as soon as the gun sounded and separated them from the field. As the pair pushed away it was Hohe who continued the assault and pushed away from Payne. Payne had suffered from breathing issues as well some other ailments.

Hart ran through the first mile in the 5:20s, which was about 10 seconds ahead of Payne and another five on the field. The prodigious Hart slowed slightly over the final two miles but she won in a course and stadium record 16:55- making herself the clear favorite to win the state title next weekend.

Glenbard West barely slid past a strong Wheaton Warrenville South team that put three girls in the top 10. New Trier and Maine South have fought against one another over the past several weeks, advanced to Peoria as expected. York got the final spot ahead of Evanston who went down the drain with late season injuries. But the one time top ranked Hilltoppers may be hard pressed to get a state trophy if no one steps up behind Hart and Payne.
