Milesplit IL Week 8 Recap

3A Boys-

1. Elmhurst (York)- The US# 4 Dukes literally conversed their way to a regional title at the Oak Park (Fenwick) Regional tallying 20 points.  Kyle Mattes (Sr.), Nathan Mroz (Sr.), Matt Plowman (Jr.), and Alex Bashqawi (Sr.) spoke about the upcoming Chicago Bulls home opener against the Miami Heat before taking off mid-race to finish in 15:04-15:05.  In reality, the four gentlemen discussed a little strategy before opening up some daylight on the field enroute to an impressive victory over Glen Ellyn (Glenbard West) who scored 77 points; next up is the Roselle (Lake Park) Sectional on 11/2.

2. Hinsdale Central- The US# 12 Red Devils took care of business at the Lyons Township Regional racking up just 35 points. Senior Billy Magnesen continues to regain his health as he placed third in 14:50. His partner in crime senior Kevin Huang was several ticks back in 14:53. The back end of the top seven ran well also as sixth and seventh place runners Chris Brenk (So.) and Alex Domiano (Jr.) copped 14th and 16th; next up is the Hinsdale Central Sectional on 11/2.

3. Arlington Heights (Hersey)- The US#24 Huskies continue to show why they are one of the best teams in the United States by crushing the Hoffman Estates Regional field with 41 points. The seven member crew barely broke a sweat in placing all of its runners inside the top 20. Senior Andy Philipose took a turn at lead scorer with a third place finish in 15:36. Junior David Rodriguez cruised home in fifth and fellow junior mate Grant Von Der Lip completed the top ten scoring with a solid ninth place effort.  The overall 1-5 spread was a measly 20 seconds; next on the agenda is the Schaumburg Sectional on 11/2.

4. Chicago Lane Tech- The Indians survived a scare from #22 Park Ridge (Maine South) and #16 Chicago (St. Ignatius) by pulling out a last minute victory 48 to 51 and 56 over the two respective schools at the Chicago Whitney Young Regional.  Lane had trailed entering the final mile but Jon Vara (Sr.) and Pavlo Hutsalyuk (Jr.) got the Lane Tech express rolling and picked off vital runners with 600m to go to finish in second and third place (15:09 & 15:11).  Despite the close victory and perceived lack of effort by some pundits, the Indians still produced a 15:28 scoring average- their second best effort of the season; next up is the Roselle (Lake Park) Sectional on 11/2.

5. Orland Park (Sandburg)- The Eagles held out its top five runners in easily winning the Marist Regional title with 22 points.  Senior Will Becker won his first varsity post-season race in 15:16  ; next up is the Hinsdale Central Sectional on 11/2.

6. O’Fallon-The Tigers did not have all of their horses on the same page yet as superstar Patrick Perrier (Sr.) sat out and a few other key runners are not up to speed health-wise. Dorrian Gordon (Jr.) continues to be the rock for his team winning his first regional title at Quincy in 15:32. Another bright spot was Evan Wesslund (Sr.) finishing in fifth place after literally being pulled off of the course last week by his coach Jon Burnett because of an Achilles Heel flair up; next on the plate is the Edwardsville Sectional on 11/2

7. Naperville (Neuqua Valley)- The Wildcats rolled to an easy victory at the Plainfield South Regional needing just 46 points to get the job done.  Nick Bushelle (Sr.) led the charge in second place. Daniel Weiss (Jr.) was sixth and the remaining scorers placed in the top 15 to complete a 40 second 1-5 split; next is the Hinsdale Central Sectional on 11/2.

8. Winnetka (New Trier)- Senior Peter Cotsirlos did not compete in the Niles West Regional but it didn’t matter as the Trevians cruised past Wilmette (Loyola Academy) 27-41.  Chase Silverman (Sr.) won going away in 15:09 on the snake like course at Niles West HS. The scoring split for New Trier was a sound 29 seconds; next up is the Roselle (Lake Park) Sectional on 11/2.

9. Wheaton-Warrenville South- The Tigers have ran well all season behind the state’s top trio of Nolan McKenna (Sr.), Luke Schroer (Sr.), and Kyle Cepeda (Jr.).  The three trailblazers finished 1,2,3 in leading their team to a 30-50 West Chicago Regional victory over #12 Naperville North. But the telling story was the 46 second scoring split, the team’s best of the season. Now, the Tigers are now a legitimate state trophy threat; next on the agenda is the Aurora (Waubonsie Valley) Sectional on 11/2.

10. New Lenox (Lincoln-Way Central)- The Knights had perhaps the easiest time in winning a regional when they placed all seven runners in the top ten on 20 points. Senior Chris Kaminski grabbed top honors in 15:26; next up is a date at the Edwardsville Sectional on 11/2.

11. LaGrange (Lyons Twp.)- The Lions didn’t need the services of Ed McCarter (Sr.) in order to advance to the next round.  Seniors James Ryan and Dan Lupano placed seventh and eighth in leading their team to a third place finish at the Lyons Regional; next on the schedule is the Hinsdale Central Sectional on 11/2.

12. Naperville North- The Huskies ran fairly well in placing second to a better Wheaton-Warrenville South team in scoring 50 points at the West Chicago Regional. John Klaiber (Jr.) led the team with a fourth place finish.  Kerry Gschwendtner (Jr.) is the team’s top runner but he finished as the fourth man in 12th place; next up is the Aurora (Waubonsie Valley) Sectional on 11/2.

13. Downers Grove North- The state’s #1 duo Zack Smith (Sr.) and Ryan Clevenger (Jr.) ran step for step in easily finishing 1-2 at the LaGrange Lyons Township Regional in 14:36.  DGN placed second as a team with 47 points. The 3-5 split was 38 seconds; next is the Hinsdale Central Sectional on 11/2.

14. Palatine- Junior Graham Brown ran to runner-up honors in leading his team to the Palatine Regional title. The Pirates scored 45 points in copping the easy victory over Lake Zurich; next up is the Schaumburg Sectional on 11/2.

15. Wilmette (Loyola Academy)- Whenever a team runs a 16 second 1-5 split good things happen.  For the Ramblers they finished a solid second to one of the state’s top squads in #8 New Trier. Junior Jack Carroll placed third overall to lead a pack of Ramblers who all were in the top 20; next is the Roselle (Lake Park) Sectional on 11/2.

16. Chicago (St. Ignatius)- The Wolfpack ran to a third place finish at the Whitney Young Regional scoring 56 points behind solid running by Chris Korabik (Sr.) and Daniel Santino (So.) who placed fourth and fifth in 15:13 and 15:15.  St. Iggy was able to produce a nice 36 second scoring split without one of their key runners Andy Weber (Jr.) who was held out by head coach Ed Ernst; next up is the Roselle (Lake Park) Sectional on 11/2.

17. Edwardsville- The Tigers probably know pre-season #1 O’Fallon’s strengths and weaknesses better than any team in the state as both schools endured three close clashes amongst themselves. Finally, the Tigers got the upper hand in defeating the Panthers 26-33 at the Quincy Regional albeit without them running the state’s best runner Patrick Perrier (Sr.). However, it was head coach George Patrylak who instilled in his team’s expectation to win.  “We went into this race with the expectation to win” he said. Junior Brydon Groves-Scott paced his team with a runner-up finish in 15:44; the Tigers will be hosting the Edwardsville Sectional on 11/2.

18. Buffalo Grove- Could it be that the Bison are showing signs of life again after two solid weekends in a row of good team racing? They very well could be in the state trophy talk again with the healthy return of senior Steven Salvano leading the way in fourth place. Buffalo Grove put all seven guys within the top 20 without running sophomore Kevin Salvano; next is the Schaumburg Sectional on 11/2.

19. Barrington- The Broncos finished a surprising third at the Palatine Regional despite a strong third place by senior Jake Herb. The 1-5 split of 1:05 is a bit high and Barrington will need the services of junior Konrad Eiring if they expect to get out of sectionals next weekend; next up is the Schaumburg Sectional on 11/2.

20. Mt. Prospect (Prospect)- The Knights appeared to be a man down in placing fourth at the Hoffman Estates Regional with 92 points. Top man Blake Hallman (Sr.) led the way in seventh place; next up is the Schaumburg Sectional on 11/2.

21. Batavia- The Bulldogs placed a distant fifth place at the West Chicago Regional scoring 107 points; next up is the Aurora (Waubonsie Valley) Sectional on 11/2.

22. Park Ridge (Maine South)- The Hawks showed they are going to be a team to watch after a very strong second place performance at the Whitney Young Regional.  Senior Jack Carpenter took individual honors in 15:04.  However, it was his team’s tough running from the gun that set everything up nicely.  The Hawks packed well behind Carpenter and junior Henry Mierzwa early on and maintained a strong presence throughout the three-mile race; next up is the Roselle (Lake Park) Sectional on 11/2.

23. Roselle (Lake Park)- The Lancers produced a nice 27 second scoring split but only finished third in the Oak Park Fenwick Regional on 91 points.  Seniors Jeremy Lozano and Andy Tomaka led their team with 14th and 15th place finishes; next up is the hosting of the Roselle (Lake Park) Sectional on 11/2.

24. Naperville Central- The Hawks placed third in the West Chicago Regional with 89 points using a 29 second scoring split. Scott Hicks (Jr.) and Ryan Auld (Jr.) ran to eighth and ninth places respectively; next up is the Aurora (Waubonsie Valley) Sectional on 11/2.

25. Oswego East- The Wolves placed third in the Plainfield South Regional scoring 92 points. The steady Ryan Fluke (Jr.) led his team in ninth place; next up is the Hinsdale Central Sectional on 11/2.

3A Girls-

1. Naperville North- Junior Elly Turris and senior Maria McDaniel go 1-2 in assisting their team’s very easy West Chicago Regional victory.  The Huskies rolled 28 points to #12 Naperville Central’s 61; next up is the Aurora (Waubonsie Valley) Sectional on 11/2.

2. Palatine- The Lady Pirates did not encounter any resistance from #10 Barrington in winning the Palatine Regional 28-87. Sophomore Sabina Yosif earned lead runner role finishing second in 17:39. Five Pirates finished in the top 10 and all seven were in the top 15; next up is the Schaumburg Sectional on 11/2.

3. Winnetka (New Trier)- The Lady Trevians received light resistance from unranked Evanston and  #20 Loyola Academy in scoring a miniscule 22 points at the Niles West Regional.  Mimi Smith (Jr.) won a fine 16:59 and her teammates all placed within the top 12; next up is the Roselle (Lake Park) Sectional on 11/2.

4. Glen Ellyn (Glenbard West)- Senior Madeline Perez continues to nurse herself back into racing form winning the Oak Park Fenwick Regional in 16:54. Her Hilltopper mates copped four of the next nine spots- junior Lisa Luczak took second place in the absence of #2 runner Lindsay Graham (So.)- in tallying 22 points; next up is the Roselle (Lake Park) Sectional on 11/2.

5. Hinsdale Central- This team did not go through the motions at the Lyons Twp. Regional in trying to defeat top-notch competition.  The Red Devils fought hard every step in beating a valiant #8 Downers Grove South team 43-44. The difference was freshman sensation Alexis Haff winning the individual crown with a strong final mile and her team moving well at the same time; next up is the Hinsdale Central Sectional on 11/2.

6. O’Fallon-The Panthers continued to be a consistent rock and the best team in Southern Illinois by a tremendous margin in beating a good #25 Edwardsville unit 20-39. The 49 second split was produced on 2,3,4,5,6 placement started by senior Sydney Neal; next on the dish is the Edwardsville Sectional on 11/2.

7. LaGrange (Lyons Twp.)- Senior Lexy Rudofsky ran step for step with Hinsdale Central's Alexis Haff before yielding to her and holding on for a strong second place in 17:16 at her team’s Lyons Twp. Regional.  More importantly, her team kept pace with Hinsdale Central and Downers Grove South to place third with 55 points; next on the plate is the Hinsdale Central Sectional on 11/2.

8. Downers Grove South- Losing to a great team like #5 Hinsdale Central is not a bad thing- especially by a point.  Another positive vibe that the Mustangs can take in a loss is their 1-5 split was under 1:00.  This is one less concern for head coach Doug Plunkett. Senior Haley Albers led three teammates in the top 10 with her third place finish; next up is the Hinsdale Central Sectional on 11/2.

9. Geneva- Despite not having two of their normal top seven runners, the Vikings were able to squeeze out a 42-49 victory over St. Charles North at the Wheaton North Regional.  The key to victory was a 4-5-6-7 finish led by Kathryn Adelman (Sr.); next on the agenda is the Aurora (Waubonsie Valley) Sectional on 11/2.

10. Barrington- The Fillies placed a distant second place to Palatine at the Palatine Regional with 87 point.  The team was paced by Caroline Reynolds (Sr.) and Lauren Conroy (So.) who earned fourth and tenth place; next up is the Schaumburg Sectional on 11/2.

11. Wheaton-Warrenville South- The youthful Tigers placed third at the West Chicago Regional on 78 points. The 1:12 scoring split was a bit high behind freshman Sara Atkins’ fifth place; next up is the Aurora (Waubonsie Valley) Sectional on 11/2.

12. Naperville Central- The Redhawks ran a second place finish at the West Chicago Regional scoring 61 points. Junior Katie Hoffman positioned herself as the team’s front man finishing in fourth place; next is the Aurora (Waubonsie Valley) Sectional on 11/2.

13. Lockport- The Lady Porters are this season’s unsung team in that they continue to produce dominant performances every weekend but no one seems to notice.  Hopefully, after destroying a good #17 Naperville Neuqua Valley squad 32-60 they will get due respect.  Freshman Morgan Bollinger ran away for the victory in 18:19; next up is the Hinsdale Central Sectional on 11/2.

14. Downers Grove North- The Trojans ran well at the Lyons Twp. Regional despite finishing fourth in the team standings with 70 points. Sophomore Kaitlyn Bonfield earned a hard fought sixth place finish for her mates; next is the Hinsdale Central Sectional on 11/2.

15. Hoffman Estates- The Hawks placed second in their own regional earning 41 points. Senior Solome Haile finished in third place; next up is the Schaumburg Sectional on 11/2.

16. Schaumburg- The Lady Saxons got a bit of revenge over #15 Hoffman Estates who defeated them a week prior at the MSL championships. This time Schaumburg edged ahead in winning the Hoffman Estate Regional 38-41.. Ali Gutt (Jr.) returned to action after missing the MSL meet last week to win in 17:54. Junior Erin Falsey and freshman Ellie O’Connell added fourth and fifth place efforts; next up is the hosting of the Schaumburg Sectional on 11/2.

17. Naperville (Neuqua Valley)- The Wildcats have been running well all season and the 28 point defeat at the hands of Lockport should not be a disappointment.  This is a good team led by senior Claire Costelloe’s second place finish; next up is the Hinsdale Central Sectional on 11/2.

18. Chicago (St. Ignatius)- Maine South’s Emily Leonard (Sr.) took the lead from the gun and won the individual title in a regional and course record 17:40. The Wolfpack ran as a strong pack behind the junior trio of Alex Jakubowski, Jill Porretta, and Olivia Meyer who ran to fourth, fifth, and sixth places respectively.  St. Iggy went on to score 36 points for the Whitney Young Regional title; next up is the Roselle (Lake Park) Sectional on 11/2.

19. Minooka- The Indians traveled quite a distance to run in a regional.  But it didn’t matter as it was an easy victory for Mackenzie Callahan (Fr.) and company who scored 21 points to win the Normal Community Regional; next up is the Edwardsville Sectional on 11/2.

20. Wilmette (Loyola Academy)- The Ramblers had a difficult time in keeping with #3 New Trier at the Niles West Regional in scoring 66 points for third place. Sophomore Kathryn House ran well in finishing in second place; next is the Roselle (Lake Park) Sectional on 11/2.

21. Oak Park-River Forest- The Huskies finished second in the Fenwick Regional scoring 70 points. Freshman Mary Blankemeier is continuing to nurse her body back into health finished seventh; next is the Roselle (Lake Park) Sectional on 11/2.

22. Lake Zurich- The Bears endured a rough day at the office in finishing fifth at the Palatine Regional scoring 113 points. The key highlight was sophomore Kristie Houghton and senior Meaghan Gelina’s finishing in 12th and 14th place; next up is the Schaumburg Sectional on 11/2.

23. Crystal Lake South- The Gators suffered a bit of a letdown after winning the Fox Valley Conference championship. This time this team finished fourth in the Palatine Regional behind league foe Cary-Grove; next is the Schaumburg Sectional on 11/2.

24. Libertyville- The Wildcats made mincemeat of the competition at the Libertyville Regional tallying 40 points. Emily Olson (Fr.) and Ali Urbanski (Sr.) go 2-3 on the rugged Adler Park course; next is the Schaumburg Sectional on 11/2.

25. Edwardsville- Senior Allie Sweatt won the Quincy Regional by 10 seconds and her team finished second to the rock steady O’Fallon; the Tigers will be hosting the Edwardsville Sectional on 11/2.

25. Cary-Grove- The Trojans took third place at the Palatine Regional scoring 100 points. Junior Morgan Schulz finished third in 17:56; next on the plate is the Schaumburg Sectional on 11/2.

2. Mahomet-Seymour- The Bulldogs showed why they are the best team in central Illinois by rolling over the competition at the Champaign Central Regional scoring 25 points.
