Titans Set for Competition in NCAA National Indoor Track

Two men and three women in individual events along with two women's relay teams will compete for Illinois Wesleyan in the 2011 NCAA Division III indoor track and field championships March 11-12 at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio.

For the men, senior Darien West (Chicago, DeLaSalle Institute) has the fourth best qualifying distance in the weight throw at 63 feet-9 inches and junior Steven Kirk (Chicago, Hyde Park HS) also qualified for the weight throw with the 13th top distance at 61 feet-1 ½ inches.

For the women, junior Lauren Alpert (Park Ridge, Maine South HS) qualified in the 400 meter dash with a time of 57.03 seconds, fifth best in the nation, and will also be in the long jump and triple jump as an individual. Her long jump distance of 18 feet-6 1/2 inches is seventh in Division III while her triple jump of 37 feet-9 ¼ inches is 10th best. All of her qualifying marks were set in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin meet.

Sophomore Tara Clemens (Bloomington, Ill., HS) has a time of 2:12.82 in the 800, the fifth best in 2011.

Sophomore Lauren Rock (Madison, Wis., James Madison Memorial HS) will also run the 400 after her qualifying time of 57.19 was the eighth best in the nation this winter. 

Alpert and Clemens will also run legs on the distance medley relay team, which qualified fourth with a time of 11:53.22. Joining them will be senior Lorin Biosca (Wheeling, Buffalo Grove HS) and freshman Mallory Kirby (Leawood, Kansas, Shawnee Mission East HS).

Clemens and Rock will be joined by junior Jessica Christy (Springfield, Sacred Heart Griffin HS) and junior Shavantay Thomas (Peoria, Richwoods HS) in the 4x400 relay. The IWU school-record time of 3:49.86 is second lowest in Division III this winter.

The Titan women were the 2008 indoor national champions and have placed fourth in 2010, 2009 and 2006; sixth in 2004; eighth in 2000; and 10th in 2007.
