ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan men's team placed fourth in the 2010 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin cross country championships at Rock Island's Saukie Golf Course on Saturday, Oct. 30.

Illinois Wesleyan had a team score of 117 as, for the 37th straight season, North Central's men's cross country team was crowned CCIW champions.
The Cardinals, who have won every CCIW title dating back to 1974, had a team score of 17. The win was the 44th in school history for North Central.

Rounding out the team scores were Augustana in second (67), Wheaton in third (78), Elmhurst in fifth (129) and Carthage in sixth (156). Millikin and North Park did not field a full squad for this event.

Illinois Wesleyan senior Wally Farris was the team's low finisher, coming in 17th with a time of 25:21.7.

North Central's Michael Spain took home the individual title and won CCIW Male Athlete of the Meet honors in the process. He won the 8K with a time of 24:15.6 to remain undefeated in 2010. Teammates Matt Brinkmeier (24:32.6) and Nathan Warstler (24:35.7) finished second and third, respectively.

Elmhurst's Pat Austin (24:41.4) placed fourth, followed by North Central's Neal Klein (24:42.0), Dan Kerley (24:42.1), Tim Hird (24:42.6) and Matt Perez (24:48.0).

Augustana's Matt Bowman (24:52.0) placed ninth, North Central's Kevin Sparks (24:53.0) was 10th, Augustana's Jonathan Smith (24:55.4) was 11th, Wheaton's Mark Phillips (25:02.1) was 12th and North Central's Pat Lesiewicz (25:07.3) finished 13th.

Wheaton's James Waterman (25:09.0) placed 14th, North Central's John Cain (25:10.6) was 15th, Augustana's Mike Tisza (25:18.2) finished 16th and Wheaton's Jake Waterman (25:27.6) was 18th.

The top 15 runners earned all-conference distinction, but Sparks, Lesiewicz and Cain were not eligible for this award due to a conference rule that only allows the top seven runners from each school to be named “all-conference”. Tisza, Farris and Waterman all earned all-conference recognition.

North Central earned Coaching Staff of the Year honors while Sparks was named the CCIW Male Freshman of the Meet.
