Women's Cross Country Takes Fifth at Aurora

AURORA, Ill. (Sept. 11, 2010) -
The North Central College women's cross country team opted to hold several of its leading runners out of the Aurora University Spartan Invitational on Friday, but the Cardinals were still able to post a fifth-place finish in the 12-team event at Oakhurst Forest Preserve.

The student-athletes who will represent North Central at next week's Illinois Intercollegiates were given the weekend off, and the remainder of the squad tallied 111 points in the competition. The University of Chicago won the team competition with 36 points.

Wheaton College's Jennifer Lewis won individual first-place honors, touring the 6,000-meter course in 23 minutes, 13.7 seconds. North Central's top finisher was Sarah Ahn, who was clocked in 23:50.9 and placed sixth.

Ann Middleton placed 14th for the Cardinals (24:23.9), while Jacki McKown finished 33rd (25:24.9), Colleen Burzynski came in 35th (25:28.9) and Tanya Starkey completed North Central's scoring by placing 38th (25:32.7).

The Illinois Intercollegiates will be contested Friday at Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Ill. The women's race is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
