Marist Sectional Was Filled With Huge Performances

The boys' race was predicted to be a blazing fast one and it for sure lived up to that. At the start, Christian Knowlton of Plainfield South got out hard with Jack Roberts of Downers Grove North. The duo were lead by what seemed to be a hyped up Javy Garcia of Plainfield Central who ended up falling off them 400 meters into the race. Roberts was joined by his teammate Matt Moravec and the duo started going to work. They lead a pack of Knowlton, Cushing, Ben Giblin of Sandburg, Will Giblin of Sandburg, Eddie Siuda of Downers Grove South, and Guillermo Ibarra of Morton through the first mile at a blazing fast 4:46.

The pack was huge and eventually started to dwindle down in the second mile. When the front pack hit mile two it dropped Suida and the Giblin twins leaving the others to come through mile two at a 9:49. This is where Cushing knew he had to start to move as his experience with Knowlton last week showed he can't let it get down to the final 800 meters left in the race. When Cushing made the move, it was quick. It caught Knowlton off guard and Knowlton couldn't respond.

Cushing came through the line in first at 14:30- the final mile in 4:40. Knowlton held on to second just missing the school record by .94 of a second running a 14:35.94. Rounding out the all-sectional honorees were Ibarra (3rd, 14:38), Moravec (4th, 14:39), Roberts (5th, 14:41), Siuda (6th, 14:51), Matt Kusak of Hinsdale Central (7th, 14:59), John Heneghan of Downers Grove South (8th, 15:00), Tommy Leonard of Marist (9th, 15:00), and Owen Hays of Lyons Township (10th, 15:01). The Mustangs of DGS claimed the team title with a score of 69 points. The placed great by going 6th, 8th, 14th, 17th, 25th, 26th, and 34th. Other teams that qualified were Downers Grove North (86 points), Lyons Township (88 points), Sandburg (105 points), and Hinsdale Central (117 points). Advancing individuals were Cushing, Knowlton, Ibarra, Leonard, Emmanuel Angomas of Plainfield East, Timmy Wade of Plainfield South, and James Sottosanto of Plainfield South.
