Record Breaking John Meyer Is Ready For The Post-Season

John Meyer Jr adds another bomb to his Lockport HS legacy

Ready for the state series!! I'm going to make this a short report.

John got back out over 70-feet in the shot put with a personal record 70' 6.5" at the SW Suburban Boys Championship. The state's all-time best performance happens to be the top mark in the country. John has been very consistent during his last meets: 69'8", 69'9", 68'11", 70'6.5". The conference championship was first meet with weather over 50 degrees. We are hoping for good weather and big throws the rest of the season. His discus throws have been consistently over 180'.

The next two weeks will see us reduce lifting volume and simplify technical work in the throws. John's shot is to the point where we are just trying to fine tune, stay consistent and see if he can catch a big throw. John has been having some small issues with the shot slipping a little on release on some throws. He thought his last throw at Conference would have been farther than his 70'6.5" throw if it didn't slip right at release. We just bought a new Velaasa shot. John has liked it so far in practice.  I'm hoping it will eliminate the slipping issue at sectionals and state.

In the discus, John is chasing instead of being chased. Jordan Johnson (Quincy) and Brian Keyes (McHenry) have been throwing really well.  Our practices have been going well in the discus. John has just been pressing a little bit in meets. He has had decent throws, but his practices tell me there is more there. Last year he threw a personal best in the discus at sectionals and state. We are hoping for a similar result this year.

See you at EIU!!
