Q&A with Concordia's Reece Gibson

Reece Gibson won the Boys Open Invite 1 at NXR Midwest in 16:10 this past November

MileSplit IN: When did you start competing? Have you competed outside of school such as USATF or AAU?

Reece Gibson: I started running when I was in 5th grade, I signed up for USATF track in the 100m and 800m and soon realized I wasn't a sprinter. I did USATF all up to 8th grade until I became all American in the 1500 and 800, I stopped after that and I started running for my high school.

What does a typical training week look like for you?

A typical training week for me would be a long run, a couple easy days and a few workouts with core every other day!

How many events do you compete in? Do you have a favorite?

I compete in the 800m,1600m,3200m, and 5k. My favorite would be the two mile because I've only raced it a couple of times and feel I have lots of room to improve!

If you could compete in any other sport or event what would it be and why?

If I could compete in another event it would be like pole vault because I think it would be fun to be up in the air!

What is something that helps you mentally prepare before a meet?

To get pumped up for a meet I listen to NF who is a Christian rapper, my favorite song by him is "on another level" because it has lines that you can relate with training or racing

Gibson surprised a lot of people and swooped in to win the small school 3200 at HSR this year

What are some goals you would like to accomplish this season?

My goal this year is to win state in the 3200m and go to brooks pr and break 9 in the 3200m

Do you have any role models you look up to?

One person I look up to is Mo Farah because he is a tough runner, and always bounces back after a triumph

Will you be competing at any national invitationals this season?

I'm not sure if I'm doing any national level races but if I am it would probably be new balance outdoor to get ready for my junior and senior year.

What is your favorite subject in school and what do plan on studying during college?

My favorite subject in school geometry because my teacher is really enthusiastic and always interested in in my running talk!

Outside of track is there any other hobbies or sports you participate in?

Outside of track I like to spend time with my friends and family at our lake house in Ohio.
