The 37th Annual Hinsdale Hornet-Devil Invite Shines Bright

Once again it was a magnificent day for cross country in the Chicagoland area. Mild climes in the upper 50s to mid 60s punctuated the scene quite well after the morning sunrise. Specifically, Katherine Legge Memorial Park in Hinsdale was the scene for Labor Day weekend's favorite harrier competition. The pre-season numbers spit what turned out to be accurate forecasts for the boys and girls varsity races.

The boys kicked things off with dramatic flair as Wheaton-Warrenville South took command early with Naperville (Neuqua Valley), Hinsdale Central, and Winnetka (New Trier) upfront with heavy numbers. But it would be Neuqua Valley charging hard over the final mile in taking out Wheaton South, whose fifth runner dropped them to third in the overall standings behind Hinsdale Central.

Host Hinsdale Central girls ran a very gutsy race. The Devilettes did not have the upfront numbers on three like Glenbard West who went 1,4,5. But an overall plan that saw a strong pack through five girls got the job done. Yes, Hinsdale Central also had three runners in the top ten but it was the fifth runner that proved crucial in the team victory over the Hilltoppers.
