Illinois Distance Running 360: How Did 2016-17 Class 1A Boys Do?

Below are the 2016 top 25 Class 1A cross country all-state placers. We chronicled their indoor and outdoor track seasons into the equation.

1. Brayden Hamblen (Sr., Rock Falls) 14:23-  Ran up in 2A and seemed to cruise against competition that appeared less than favorable than 1A. Hamblem captured the Illinois Top Times 1600m title; won the 3200 state champion and ran a personal 9:11.99 at the Arcadia Invitational.

2. Wyatt McIntyre (Jr., Athens [Coop]) 14:27- Despite battling injuries and sickness, McIntyre produced a solid spring that produced a personal best in the 3200m (9:11.32 at Distance Night in Palatine); placed 3rd in state 3200m and 5th in 1600m;               

3. Logan Hall (Jr., Arthur) 14:44- This young man had perhaps the biggest jump of all Class A boys. Hall set personal bests in all disciplines that he competed in for indoor and outdoor seasons. Hall won the Illinois Top Times 3200m crown and clocked 9:21.70 enroute; outdoors is where Hall really stepped forward. He won his first state title in the 3200 with a solid 9:13.74 clocking. Later at the Midwest Distance Classic he dropped his personal best down to IL#6 9:05.75; 4:19.49 is a personal best and it earned Hall a third place at state.

4. Tanner Chada (Sr., Hinckley) 14:54- Won state 1600m in a personal best 4:18.35; took 2nd in the 3200m (9:16.28); ran personal best 9:12.54/IL#13

5. Justin Phillips (Sr., St.Joseph-Ogden) 15:03- Placed 7th in the state 1600m; ran 9:42.18 for 3200m

6. Alex Helmuth (Jr., Monticello) 15:09- Placed 8th in the state 3200m; clocked 9:34.28 as a personal best

7. Chris Ahlers (Sr., Newman Central Catholic) 15:12- 6th in the state 1600m; ran a personal best 4:18.57 at the Distance Night in Palatine; ran 2:00.41 in the 800m

8. Riley Wells (So., Rockford Christian) 15:17- Could be a budding star after winning the 800m in IL#2 1:52.84. Wells' time is the second fastest mark in the country for a sophomore; Illinois Top Times indoor 800m champion; anchored 4x4 squad to a state title.

9. Ryan Hommowun (Sr., Richmond (R.-Burton) 15:18- Competed in 2A but did not advance to state in any event; ran 9:52.81 for 3200m

10. Tyler Pasley (Sr., Shelbyville)  15:19- 8th in state 1600m; ran 1:57.98 in the 800m

11. Eli Ten Eyck (Jr., Pittsfield)  15:21- Runner up finish in the 1600m w/big personal best 4:19.01

12. Kort McClellan (So., Cumberland) 15:22- 12th in state 3200m

13. Charlie Parrish (Jr., Freeburg) 15:24- 7th in state 3200m (9:35.08)

14. Brandon Schnitker (Jr., Nashville) 15:24- Runner up state championship finish in the 800m clocking IL#6 1:53.53

15. Jackson Stewart (So., Decatur St.Teresa) 15:25- Finished 12th in 1600m state championship; 8th in 3200m state meet w/9:45.35 best

16. Alex Mack (Sr., Freeburg) 15:28- Did not run track; will play basketball in college at MacMurray College

17. Ethan Morrow (Sr., Mercer County) 15:28- Competed in two state meet events: lead off state runner up 4x800 relay, 9th in 1600m; ran 4:26.91 personal best

18. Garrett Dixon (So., Monticello) 15:28- 9th place in 2A 3200m (9:39.32)

19. Christopher Collet (So., Seneca) 15:28- Qualified for state 1600m; 4:42.21 personal best

20. Andrew Dobrescu (Jr., Elgin Harvest Christian Academy) 15:29- 13th in state 3200m

21. Trey Houmes (Jr., Hoopeston Area) 15:29- Qualifled for state in two events: 3200m (5th/9:36.58) and 1600m (4:30.94 prelim pb)

22. Michael Sisko (Sr., Elgin Harvest Christian Academy) 15:29- Highlight was 3200m indoor 10:04.59 at Illinois Top Times

23. Tim Bertulis (Jr., Johnsburg) 15:31- 12th in 2A 3200m running pb 9:48.30; 4:36.71 (1600m pb)

24. Owen Habeger (Jr., Illinois Valley Central) 15:33- Competed in 2A state 1600m prelim running 4:38.23 (pb 4:24.88); clocked 10:08.19i for 3200m

25. Wyatt Wolfersberger (Jr., St. Joseph-Ogden) 15:35- 11th in state 3200m (10:08.46); ran 9:54.31 personal best; ran 4:36.93 for 1600m
