It is hard to fathom at the turn of this centurn, boy sprints had hit bottom. The big school champion routinely ran times not up to the rich history of Illinois speed standards. For example, Kennie Mannie of Bloom Township won the 100m in 11.00 in 2000. That time today would not even make the 2A state final! Are we in a new era of fast times for our sprinters? Is this the "Golden Age" for sprints in Illinois? There is one thing for certain though: many of the best athletes in other sports are coming out for track and field.
