One of the best track and field coaches in the state of Illinois just got a little bit better. Zontavius Johnson, now formerly of Chicago North Lawndale Charter High School, has accepted the head girls track and field coaching position at powerhouse Homewood-Flossmoor. Johnson, who had been at N. Lawndale for the previous eight years, coached 46 all-city performers, 19 all-state runners, and 3 outdoor state champs while at the west side school. The most important stat on Johnson's athletic resume, though, are the 29 athletes he has coached who went to compete in college on athletic scholarships.

Johnson will inherit a loaded program that contains arguably the state's top all around track and field athlete in All-American Jaimie Robinson. The Lady Vikings finished 7th in the 3A state championship in 2016. But keep in mind they will return all four legs of two all-state relays: 4x1 and 4x2. Coach Johnson has done very well with skeletal teams, now he will have tremendous depth and a strong ability to develop talent in the off season. Expect Homewood-Flossmoor to immediately contend for a state title in 2017.

Coach Johnson's reaction:

This is great move for not just me but my family. It will be a great opportunity for my daughter attend a great  a great school. Coaching wise it gives me an opportunity to show want I can bring to the table with all the things we had gone through out at NLCP. Let me be clear leaving NLCP was a hard decision because I spent 7-8 years there. I take that next step in my coaching career at program that could hold its own, and building relationships with a bunch of great young people. However, NLCP will always hold a spot in my heart.
