IL Kids Take Last Stand On High School Season: NBON & Brooks PR Preview

The Brooks PR special invite contingent will not be denied as Josh Eiker (Galesburg), Jesse Reiser (McHenry), Pavlo Hutsalyuk (Chicago Lane Tech), and Brittny Ellis (Gurnee Warren) take aim at the fierce competition in Seattle.

Whether it’s the Seattle Space Needle or the sites of beautiful Greensboro, North Carolina, the small contingent of Illinois track and field athletes will be fighting the nation’s elite competition on both fronts. The New Balance Outdoor Nationals start a tad bit later than on the schedule with festivities beginning on Friday. Watch for some action from Lincoln Way East girls in two sprint relays. The goals are simple: make the finals and go from there. They aim to put up some impressive times and build on a super duper fast 2016 campaign.

As for the boys, it was supposed to be a very promising field but since has been dashed by uncertainty. Cahokia superstar junior Ja'mari Ward was supposed to be a headliner here. He will not be competing per his coach Leroy Millsap who simply said: "Ja'mari has been shut down for the year." What does this mean? No further explanation from the Cahokia camp. Is the kid hurt? Did he violate some rule over in Cuba? His marks there were not up to par if you consider 24'/47' sub-standard. Stay tuned as we are just entering the summer season.

The small but powerful crew are all champions with a winning pedigree. So keep an eye on what they can do.

Girls-

800m Section 1 Timed Finals (Sunday 6/21 @ 1:25p EST)

1 416 Meggan Grams 15 Boonsboro, MD

2 4373 Lauren Archer 16 Miami, FL

3 4453 Sarah Edwards 16 Bellingham, MA

4 4418 Karina Liz (Jr., Aurora Central Catholic)

5 3881 Lauren Jackson 16 Atlanta, GA

6 3435 Emma Call 16 Richmond, VA

7 282 Ashley Greenlee 15 Hampton, VA

8 3676 Kayla Martin 17 Shamong, NJ

9 3692 Maryanna Lansing 16 Menands, NY

Section 2 Timed Finals

1 33 Mikayla Schneider 16 Wayne, PA

2 1034 Michaela Hackbarth (Jr., Downers Grove South)

3 2232 G'Jasmyne Butler 16 Raleigh, NC

4 664 Karina Haymore 17 Las Vegas, NV

5 5126 Reagan Bustamante 16 Springfield, VA

6 4365 Skye Zeller 16 Cocoa, FL

7 4797 Alyssa Shupe 15 Forest, VA

8 4853 Chandi Piiru 15 Orange, NJ

9 4412 Joy Ripslinger 17 Davenport, IA

Tony’s thoughts: This is one last chance for the middle-distance darlings to shine bright in their final high school meet of 2015. Hackbarth and Liz are both state champions who competed consecutively on separate weekends since the state meet. Last weekend though, Liz and Hackbarth ran at the US Army Midwest Distance Classic in different events. Liz won the 800m and Hackbarth ran 5:11 for the 1600m. They will try and break 2:10 one more time. No Illinois girl has yet to do so this season.

5000m Championship (Fri. 6/19 @ 9:10p):

Section 2 Timed Finals

1 1730 Weini Kelati 18 Leesburg, VA

2 3160 Maryjeanne Gilbert (Jr., Peoria Notre Dame)

3 3464 Carleen Jeffers 15 Ridgewood, NJ

4 2477 Bridgid Selfors 17 Old Saybrook, CT

5 4700 Colleen Carney 15 Glen Mills, PA

6 4694 Aislinn Devlin 17 Downingtown, PA

7 4802 Libby Davidson 17 Lynchburg, VA

8 2130 Sheridan Wilbur 15 Providence, RI

9 416 Meggan Grams 15 Boonsboro, MD

10 2842 Diana Vizza 16 Glen Head, NY

11 5033 Kathleen Mansure 15 Boone, NC

12 3227 McKenzie Yanek 16 Bettendorf, IA

13 1994 Amanda Swaak 15 Vienna, VA

14 602 Sarah Kettel 16 Brighton, MI

15 4568 Ryen Frazier 15 Raleigh, NC

16 5118 Sierra Castaneda 16 Hackettstown, NJ

Tony’s Thoughts: Maryjeanne will take her first crack on the national track scene against some of the top girls she competed against in at last Fall's Footlocker National Cross Country Championship. Gilbert is the Illinois school girl champion who has faced little opposition over the past year. She will see top girls like Ryen Frazier (North Carolina) and Sarah Kettel of Michigan.

100HH prelims (Sat. 6/20 @ 11:25am):

Heat 3 Prelims

2 4354 Carly Lester 15 Fort Collins, CO

3 5159 Milan Parks 15 Chesapeake, VA

4 3328 Anna Cockrell 16 Waxhaw, NC

5 4555 Kylie McMillan 15 Greensboro, NC

6 2040 Breanne Bygrave 16 Raleigh, NC

7 4421 Jenny Kimbro (Jr., Jamaica-Seidel)

8 5356 Madison Langley-Walker 18 Cheltenham, PA

Tony’s thoughts: This race is not Kimbro's best suit. Her best of 14.42 may not even make the final. But she is a strong and determined hurdler so don't put anything past her.

400M Hurdles (Sun. 6/21):

Section 2 Timed Finals

2 4420 Morgan Schulz (Sr., Cary-Grove)

3 139 India Lowe 15 Mechanicsville,

4 2806 Tara Hernandez 16 North babylon, N

5 1980 Erin Marsh 17 Buford, GA

6 5302 Temi Odukale 15 Sewaren, NJ

7 1985 Jazmine Gooden 16 Greensboro, NC

8 1892 Naomi Whitaker 16 Portsmouth, Va

Section 3 Timed Finals

2 2097 Amber Tanner 16 Brentwood, TN

3 4354 Carly Lester 15 Fort Collins, CO

4 2203 Maddy Mueseler 15 Latrobe, PA

5 2873 Shamaria Lovett 15 Miami, FL

6 179 Brittley Humphrey 16 Birmingham, AL

7 4421 Jenny Kimbro (Jr., Jamaica Sidell)

8 1793 Jaliyah White 15 New Haven, CT

Tony’s thoughts: Kimbro was the best IL long hurdler this past year with a personal best of 42.95 for the 300m variety. She should be fine over the 400 version. Schulz is running despite not being in shape and coming off of an injury that derailed her post season. The U of Illinois signee is competing more for self gratification. She has family in the Greensboro area who haven't seen her compete before.

1) 1292 Emma Roberts 15 2) 1289 Akili Echols 17

Tony's thoughts: Getting to the finals will be an order that is doable for the Griffins. The month layoff between competition may pose a timing issue though with the batons.

Tony's thoughts: Someone from here should be fighting for top six All-American status

Shot Put Championship (6/21 @1:00pm)

Flight 3 Finals

1 4423 Kathleen Young (So., Warrensburg-Latham)

2 1043 Oyesade Olatoye 15 Dublin, OH

3 4207 Noelle Parker 15 Throw1Deep, GA

4 1031 Alyssa Wilson 17 Jackson, NJ

5 4521 Emily Meier 16 Plymouth, MI

7 833 Emily Stauffer 16 Reinholds, PA

8 4657 Mariah Mays 15 Rome, NY

10 5214 Jessica Molina 16 Westwood, NJ

13 3672 Courtney McCartney 15 Middleburg, PA

14 2344 Alycia Springs 16 Charlotte, NC

15 1809 Kristina Insingo 15 Hicksville, NY

Tony’s Thoughts: Top 8 to the finals and that should be a piece of cake for the supremely talented KD Young. She was ranked #1 in the USA at 50’10” until her friendly nemesis Sophia Rivera knocked from the perch. Both aces have since dropped to US #3 and #4- but this will be battle for a third time this season. The great duel between the nation’s top two throwers could be an epic one as the summer season approaches.

Discus Championship (6/20 @ 12pm)

Flight 3 Finals

1 4203 Hayden Merrick 15 Throw1Deep, GA

2 4423 Kathleen Young (Warrensburg Latham)

4 4513 Andrea Sietsema 15 Grand Rapids, MI

5 4535 Sophia Rivera 16 Brentwood, MO

14 1809 Kristina Insingo 15 Hicksville, NY

15 1043 Oyesade Olatoye 15 Dublin, OH

Tony’s Thoughts: KD is good for 150-feet if she is interested.

3 660 Braxton, Dajour 15 Las Vegas, NV

4 1066 Seufer, Peter 15 Lynchburg, VA

5 4817 Hagge, Perrin 16 Middleton, WI

12 4311 Berry, Anthony 16 Traverse City, M

13 998 Novak, Matthew 15 Glen Allen, VA

14 4524 Hill, Ben 15 Royal Oak, MI

Tony's thoughts: Can Bryce Richards re discover the magic that brought him to run 4:09 at the St. Louis Festival of Miles or is he maxed out from a great career that produced a 9:33 effort like last weekend in Lisle for the 2m.

400m championship (6/21 @ 2:15p)

Section 1Timed Finals

2 3942 Johnson, Bobby 17 College Park, GA

3 3345 Bunion, Deshawne 15 Rahway, NJ

4 597 Snyder, Andrew 16 Camp Hill, PA

5 4308 Thompson, Christopher (Sr., Lemont HS)

6 4478 Pratt, Darnell 17 Ellicott City, M

Tony’s Thoughts: Thompson has been training with Abe Jones and Track My Speed Club. This means he is in shape and ready to run either his season best or a new life time best. But ultimately the goal is to show he can compete with some of the nation’s elite and promising long dashers. Andrew Snyder from Pennsylvania is the state champion from his state and the favorite. Thompson has a lifetime best of 48.18

Tony’s Thoughts: Last year it was Chicago Lane Tech who were the supposed surprised party crashers. Could Lyons Township be that team this time around? This is the Lion’s first post-state trip and they will either find it very enjoyable or a big awakening. One tends to believe they have been training in preparation for a loaded field that will feature the US #2-5 plus a few more top 12 teams. Lyons is US#10 at 7:43.08. Senior Alex Lima will lead the way in what hopes to be an All-American session late Saturday night.
