Wheeling Invitational Reprise

Boys snap recap-

Results

  • Unranked Lake Zurich surprised the entire field including 3A #5 New Trier who loaded the field. According to New Trier coach Dave Wisner before the start of the varsity race. "We haven't raced in three weeks. This is a good time to bust off some rust." New Trier looked very healthy early on and up to the second mile. But the leadership of super sophomore Matt Pereira was too much as he got the sweet spot #1 win in a meet record 15:01. The Bears pack then went to work in the final mile on the strength of senior Justin Shim (Sr.) who finished 16th in 15:35.  The #5 runner and freshman Patrick Burns closed things out in 15:43. The win by Pereira coupled by the outstanding pack running that netted eight seconds in winning 81-82. #20 Maine South grabbed third with 107 points. Wheeling tallied 116 points for fourth place.

  • Huntley junior Keagan Smith ran a great race but didn't have enough in his tank to keep up with Pereira over the final half-mile before settling for 2nd in 15:09. Senior Henry Mierzwa held on for 3rd over Belvidere North junior Eryk Yunk 15:14-15:19. Ben Casey, a senior from Highland Park, closed out the top five in 15:20.
